A heavily worn book whose primary value lies firmly in its legible text, internal completeness, and overall scarcity on the open market. The book is quarter-bound in early marbled boards which show significant rubbing, surface loss, edge-wear, and dog-eared corners. The spine backstrip has entirely perished, completely exposing the text block's sewing, binding cords, and the fascinating handwritten waste paper used as a spine lining by the original provincial binder. Despite this substantial exterior degradation, the boards remarkably remain attached. The text block itself features charming untrimmed deckle edges, with some general age-toning, mild foxing to the leaves, and the ghosting of a removed bookplate to the front pastedown, but otherwise remains a sound, highly unsophisticated survival of a fragile 1830s production. Catalogue Note: This scarce first edition is complete with its lithographic map of Southport and the two prospects of Lytham and Blackpool (understood to be a coloured copy). A highly unsophisticated example in what remains of its original binding, it has not been subjected to modern restoration, retaining its rustic deckled edges and exposing the early 19th-century binding techniques on the perished spine. The book features an early ink ownership signature of a Blackpool resident to the front preliminary blank, and is understood to be a presentation copy from the author to a Mr. Healey of Chester. Early local histories and guides of this nature are increasingly scarce to find, particularly in their original, untouched state.
