He states that he will derive 'much satisfaction in being allowed to join in any undertaking to do honor to the Memory of Bishop Ken' [ Thomas Ken (1637-1711) ], and subscribes for three guineas. The memorial would appear to have been a stained-glass window in Ken's church at Frome by 'Mr. O'Connor and his son', as reported in the Gentleman's Magazine, February 1845 and February 1849. …

But who are the Puseyites? , Even their bitterest foes allow that they are men of piety, men of zeal, men of earnestness of purpose, men of holy life, and to such the world metes out its hatred. Just let me give you one or two specimens of Church matters in those days; for instance, at the latter end of the last century. Before you was a huge erection, totally obscuring the Altar, containing boxes for preaching clergyman, praying clergyman, and parish clerk. This erection has been not unfitly called "a three-decker." Presently the Parson began to say the prayers, and take snuff, upon which the Clerk responded and did likewise, and the people gazed listlessly about them. And if you went into the country it was the same old tale--a drunken Parson, a wicked people, a desecrated church, often not fit for a stable, and a Service which would shame the savages of the South Sea Islands. Compare the Church then with what she is now. Thanks be to God we have now a learned and godly clergy, cathedrals and churches cleared of all their rubbish, singing which can rival in excellence that of any age, overflowing congregations, devout people, large schools, charities innumerable, and few sick beds unvisited in the whole land. And who have been the principal instruments in effecting such a revolution? Those very men against whom the cry ascends, Down with the Puseyites. It is said that the Puseyites are only Roman Catholics in disguise. Not so. They claim to be Catholics--English, not Roman.'.…

The previous month he received 'an engraved Circular' from his correspondent, from which he now quotes a passage stating that his subscription of a guinea [to the Church Institution] is due. 'I have no recollection of having ever promised a subscription to the Institution referred to. If I did promise it, probably you can find my Letter, in which I did so.' He has no doubt that the Institution 'deserves public support: but circumstances made it necessary for me some years since to avoid the responsibility of any new Annual Subscriptions, beyond those to which I was already pledged.'.…

She cannot tell her 'how late the final proof must be, as it depends on the printers, and the Christmas week so disturbs arrangements that they generally wish to have all finished earlier than usual'. She suggests sending he a card 'when the proofs come in to me', as there will be a few days to spare, 'while the other ladies are correcting them'.…

Later wrappers. Marshall, 1828- 1883(?), an Anglican priest who converted to Roman Catholicism in the early 1860s and published satirical pamphlets on Anglican 'comprehensiveness'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. He thinks that Rickards 'could answer the question in the enclosed letter with much more authority, exactness, and detail, than I could.' If Rickards has 'anything to say on the subject', Mozley asks him to 'send it at once to my brother at Oxford, as he is in the last crisis of an article on the Manuscript Commission'. He continues with news of 'Grace' ('now home for the holidays') and of his health.…

Octavo. 13 pages. Disbound pamphlet from the Churchill Babington collection. Good, but foxed and with title grubby and stained. Cutting [from the Guardian, September, 1890] of correspondence relating to Cardinal Newman and the authors of 'Tracts for the times' loosely inserted.

4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Aged, worn and with spots of discoloration. 106 lines in a truly execrable hand. The following reading is tentative. The recipient is not named and the letter is signed 'T. Outram Marshall'. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, / I also read the letters in the Guardian very carefully'. There follow references to 'the argument of a pamphlet as to the Teaching of Holy Scripture'. The third paragraph begins: 'But, to my mind the words of the Council of Arles are evidence that in 314 the Bps. there assembled believed just what our Petitioner says.' He quotes a Latin test, and discusses it. There are three long numbered objections. and three assertions are given, of which 'We are convinced'. He discusses what is the case 'If "the High Ch. Party" is not content with the Scripture & the existing Laws of the English & whole western Ch'. He is glad that the recipient does not agree on one point 'with the Bp. of London', 'But if you do not - what remains - you say the husband of this unfaithful wife - has permission to marry again - then it follows that he has permission to dissolve the bond, which till he desides to do so - has not been broken. This is a wholly new theory, which as yet no Bp. East or West has [fulfilled?]. / Forgive my writing this - I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold'.…
