Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. The retir'd gardener. In six parts. The two first being dialogues between a gentleman and gardener. Containing the methods of making . and improving a fruit and kitchen-garden . The four last parts treat of the manner of . adorning gardens; explaining the art of making and disposing of parterres, arbours or greens, wood-works, arches, columns and other compartments proper for the most beautiful gardens and plantations. London, J. Tonson, 1717. 8vo. [16] + 432 + 8p. Engraved frontispiece by M. van der Gucht after L. Laguerre, 20 engraved plates, woodcuts in text. Contemporary decorative panelled calf; lower spine strengthened. A rich source of information on contemporary horticultural practice, and garden design much influenced by French models. London and Wise owned the celebrated Brompton Park nursery from circa 1688 to 1714, and supplied most of the large estates with plants and trees; the nursery was highly recommended by John Evelyn. Wise was 'master gardener'to Queen Anne, whilst London travelled the country giving advice on gardens including Chatsworth, Longleat and Castle Howard. The present work is advertised as a translation of two French works (those of François Gentil and Louis Liger) but with 'several alterations and additions proper for our English culture'. This second edition revised by Joseph Carpenter who became a partner in the nursery in 1714, gives more details of English practice, tree-planting schemes and fruit preferences than the first published 1706 edition, and is considered of more use to the real gardener. There is a list of fruits and catalogue of seeds available at the Brompton nursery. Among the attractive plates are several of parterres, allées and garden layouts with topiary and fountains; arbours and covered walks are illustrated in an elm-entwined portico and a 'gallery'of hornbeam (the text notes that the English would use lime). A handsome copy in contemporary binding, very faint toning only to one or two leaves. Henrey 990. See also David Green, Gardener to Queen Anne, 1958. …

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Original illustrated wrappers. Folio. (31,5 x 23,5 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Aravic letters). 19 p., richly illustrated with reproduced photographs and drawings. The front cover is age-toned, with slight chipping along the extremities and wear to the spine. A stamp by the newspaper's office in Istanbul is on the rear cover. Otherwise, a very good copy. A special issue published by Büyük Gazete in honour of the Afghan King's visit to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first President of Turkey, on May 20, 1928. This historic visit by King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan, accompanied by his wife, Queen Soraya, marked the first official state visit by a foreign head of state to Turkey following the proclamation of the Republic. During this visit, Turkey signed its first technical assistant agreement with Afghanistan. This rare 82nd issue of the newspaper, which was published 110 issues between 1926 and 1928, is almost entirely dedicated to Afghanistan. The newspaper contains detailed accounts and numerous visuals from the Afghan King's and Queen's visits to European countries such as Germany and France. It includes images of the Afghan Royal Family and their activities, scenes of the King hunting with his entourage, his speeches in Afghanistan, his photographic portrait, and a watercolour portrait of him, and various views of the country. Describing Afghanistan as "the most beautiful country in Asia," the newspaper also presents black-and-white photographs of Amanullah Khan's grand visit to India, the King playing billiards, and others. The final pages contain an instalment of a serialized story about a Kastamonu reserve officer named Ahmed, who was captured by the Soviet Army and later escaped, as well as a Turkish translation of a Sherlock Holmes adventure. The coloured front cover illustrates King Amanullah Khan and Queen Sureyya side by side, while the back cover displays six black-and-white photographs from the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922). As a young nation, Turkey signed its first international treaty on March 1, 1921, in Moscow with Afghanistan, then under the rule of Amanullah Khan. After the establishment of the Republic, Afghanistan viewed Turkey as an elder brother, and inspired by Atatürk's reforms, Amanullah Khan initiated a series of modernization efforts in his own country. However, his initiatives, including legislative reforms and granting political rights to women, faced strong opposition from conservative religious leaders. In November 1928, an uprising broke out, leading to Amanullah Khan's overthrow by a tribal leader and forcing him to flee Afghanistan. Nearly ten months after his first visit to Turkey, Amanullah Khan returned to Ankara, where Atatürk personally welcomed him at the same train station, accompanied him in his car, and hosted him at the Palace Hotel. To honour the deposed king, Atatürk also held a banquet at the Çankaya Pavilion. (Sources: Inönü Vakfi online, Wikipedia, Çelikbilek: Afgan Krali Amanullah Han'in Türkiye Ziyareti in 1928). Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Extremely rare complete run of all periods of this significant satiric magazine published and closed irregularly during a wide and turbulent period, starting with the dethronement of Sultan Abdulhamid after the Constitutional Monarchy regime and until one year after the Alphabet Revolution following the proclamation of the Republic. The magazine was named after its founder, Cemil Cem. Cem was a weekly political satire magazine that was first published in the Ottoman Empire and then in Turkey. It was published between 1910 and 1912 (The first series included 43 issues: 28 Tesrin-i Sani 1326 [10 November 1910] - 6 Tesrin-i Evvel 1328 [19 October 1912]) and continued its publication in the period 1927-1929 (15 Kanun-i Evvel 1927 [15 December 1927] - 2 Mayıs 1929 [2 May 1929]; suspended between 1912-1927). Cem was restarted by Cemil Cem in 1927. The same year he was put on trial for the publication of a caricature in the magazine which folded in 1929. Cem was a bilingual (French-Ottoman Turkish) publication that carried both satire and literary pieces. In 1928, with the imposition of the Latin alphabet, it switched to publishing unilingually in Turkish. Cem featured copious amounts of satirical cartoons and caricatures complementing its articles. Refik Halit (Karay) was a key contributor to the periodical. Cemil Cem (1882-1950) was a Turkish diplomat, cartoonist, and journalist who worked for the Ottoman satirical magazine Kalem and founded his satirical magazine Cem. Following his graduation he held several diplomatic posts in Paris, Vienna, and Rome. He published several cartoons in the Ottoman satirical magazine Kalem which was in circulation between 1908 and 1911. His cartoons contained Western revolutionary ideas. Following his return to Istanbul he founded a satirical magazine entitled Cem in November 1910 which folded in 1912. His major collaborator in Cem was Refik Halit Karay. Cemil left Istanbul for Europe in 1912 and settled there until 1921. Between 1921 and 1925 he worked as an administrator at the Fine Arts Faculty in Istanbul which was later attached to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Cemil restarted his magazine Cem in 1927. The same year he was tried due to a cartoon published in the magazine. After the closure of his magazine in 1929 he became a city council member of Istanbul, but he left the post soon. During the period of the Second Series, satirist Orhan Seyfi Orhon (1890-1972) was the chief editor of the periodical. Extremely rare 29 issues of the second and third years in two volumes of this rare Hamidian period (1876-1908) Ottoman periodical, devoted to the circulation of contemporary prose and poetry, as well as criticism, Mekteb was edited by Ismail Hakki from 1891 to 1894, followed by Ebülfeyyaz Hakki from 1894-1898. The magazine was a particularly important voice for the Servet-i Fünun [i.e. The Wealth of the Sciences] generation of writers. Weekly; 26 Temmuz 1307 [8 August 1891] - 30 Kanun-i Sanî 1313 [12 February 1898]. This periodical was published by Ottoman-Armenian bookseller, publisher, and printer Karabet Kesisyan Efendi (Garabed Keshishian, 1850-1911), who is a prominent Armenian figure in the history of Ottoman printing. As a prolific and enterprising figure, he was one of the most famous printers of the Hamidian Era (1876-1909). His contributions in this field reflect the sociocultural changes that occurred gradually in the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. His printing house published mostly Turkish language textbooks and became the sole provider for the Turkish military and civil schools from 1889 until the beginning of the twentieth century.
