The heroine, Lucile, is beloved by two bitter rivals, the English Lord Alfred Hargrave (i.e., Vargrave) and the French Duke of Luvois. She loves Alfred, but misunderstanding keeps them apart. Long years after, Alfred's son and the Duke's niece fall in love, are separated by the old feud but finally reunited through the efforts of Lucile, who has become a nursing nun, under the name of Soeur Seraphine. The book went through more than ninety editions in America. Condition notes: (iv), 318 numbered pp; HB. This was Lytton's first publication, a book of poetry; and he went on to publish subsequent works under the Owen Meredith name. The private printing of this work makes it a very scarce edition. Worldcat identifies only one library holding worldwide for this 1891 printing - The British Library. A good paperback in card wraps. Covers are foxed and soiled, with nicks and creases, and losses to head and tail of spine. Inner joint with a small gap to cover. First endpapers are also a little spotted, but remaining text is clean and bright. Text page lengths and widths vary, as issued, and contents title remains uncut at top edge. A scarce find. Text in English. vii + 211pp. Weight approximately 213g unpacked. Approx Dimensions: 181mm high x 121mm wide x 13mm deep.

This being the author's most notable story told in verse originally published in 1860.

Robert Bulwer-Lytton, who wrote under the pseudonym Owen Meredith, was an English Statesman and Poet. The son of novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Robert Bulwer-Lytton was better remembered for his role as a diplomat and Viceroy of India. He published several volumes of poetry as well as literary remains and letters of his father. In half calf bindings with marbled boards by Field and Co. Externally, slightly rubbed with wear to extremities and especially at head and tail of spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with spotting to first and last few pages, and the occasional spot in the text. Very Good. book.

The scarce first trade edition of this work, which first appeared in a privately printed edition the year prior.The work of Edward Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, who published poetry under the pseudonym Owen Meredith.Lytton died in late 1891, and tipped in to the front blanks is a letter from his wife, Edith Bulwer-Lytton, Countess of Lytton, dated March 1892.She begins the letter 'Dear Sir, we sent to you a first edition of Lord Lytton's poems', but explains that by 'some accident' the address was incorrect. She continues 'in your kind letter to me after my dear husband's death you mentioned having still a small sum to pay'. She says she will have the amount placed on credit, and closes the missive with 'believe me dear sir very faithfully, Edith Lytton'.The individual the letter is addressed to is not named.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Watt of A. P. Watt and Son, literary agent of Rudyard Kipling. The charming illustrated bookplate of British literary agent A. P. Watt appears to the front pastedown. Watt is generally regarded as the first true literary agent, when he arrived on the literary scene in the late 1870s. In the publisher's original paper vellum binding, with gilt detailing. Back strip age toned, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Board perimeters a touch age toned. Bookplate to front pastedown. Letter pasted to front free endpaper and first blank.
