Band wat verkleurd. - Biografische schets van Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck (1637-1688) die de eerste gouverneur van Suriname na de oprichting van de Societeit van Suriname in 1683 werd. Hij kocht een derde aandeel in deze organisatie, naast de West-Indische Compagnie en de stad Amsterdam, en ging als onbetaald gouverneur naar de kolonie. Bij zijn aankomst trof hij een verwaarloosde kolonie aan en zette hij allerlei hervormingen in gang: hij moedigde Hugenoten en de Labadisten aan om zich te vestigen, liet plantages aanleggen, sloot vrede met inheemse stammen (Caraïben, Waroes, Arowakken), verbeterde de infrastructuur van Paramaribo en liet Fort Sommelsdijk bouwen bij de samenvloeiing van de Commewijne- en Cotticarivier. Hij kreeg echter te maken met ontevreden soldaten vanwege voedsel- en dranktekorten. Op 19 juli 1688 leidde dit tot een muiterij waarbij hij en zijn assistent Laurens Verboom werden vermoord door rebellerende soldaten Condition : very good copy. Keywords : SURINAME,
