Fernel war u. a. Leibarzt von König Heinrich II. und seiner Gemahlin Katharina de Medici. "The first systematic treatise on pathology, which also introduced the names for the sciences of pathology and physiology." (Garrison & Morton). Die Titel lauten: I.: Joann. Fernelii Ambiani Universa medicina / primum quidem studio et diligentia Guilielmi Plantii Cennomani elimata ; nunc autem notis, observationibus et remediis secretis Joann. et Othonis Heurnii, Ultraject. et aliorum praestantissimorum medicorum scholiis illustrata ; cui accedunt casus et observationes rariores quas cl. d.d. Otho Heurnius in Academia Leydensi primarius medicinae practicae, anatomiae et chirurgiae professor, in diario practico annotavit, quantum praeterea huic editioni accesserit, typographorum epistola ad lectorem fusius docebit ; adjectus est index locupletissimus. II.: Johan. Othonis Heurnii, . The Frontispiece: "Representing Fernel and the two editors seated at a table, Fernel between the Heurnes in earlier costume than they, and wearing the doctor's hat, whereas they are bare-headed. The scene is in the court of a hospital modified from Leyden.
