Softcover. Zustand: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Pages in good condition. Cover has wear and some spine damge but pages are great. Softcover. English. Pub Year 1991, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> The Tables Book by Tom Otterness explores the influential artistic land…scape of the 1980s, marked by significant movements such as Neo-expressionism and critical media engagement. This period saw the resurgence of painting's prominence, alongside the emergence of feminist critiques addressing patriarchal structures. The book examines the substantial impact of European artists on American art, the celebration of painting, and the rising auction prices that reflected this revitalisation. Theoretical critiques of Modernism led to a crisis in representation, while the broader themes of multiculturalism challenged established ethnocentric traditions and institutions. The decade closed amid the toll of AIDS, economic downturns, and rising censorship, presenting a complex interplay of events and themes.Otterness's work is notably distinct; he navigated the art scene by either participating in collaborative endeavours or forging an independent, politically engaged aesthetic. A founding member of Collaborative Projects, Inc. (Colab) in New York, he gained recognition in the late 1970s through his hydrocal figures, which he referred to as small monuments. His interest in public sculpture is evident; he sought to create art that was both accessible and monumental, as demonstrated by the affordability of his sculptures. In 1985, Otterness's vision expanded with his ambitious bronze and steel Tables, which became a significant focus of his artistic practice.Throughout the narrative, Otterness's sensitivity to historicism shapes his approach, allowing him to adapt his sculptures into an infinitely versatile format. The Tables Book serves as a vital lens through which to understand the evolving dynamics of art and the role of public engagement in sculpture during this pivotal decade.

Illustrations (not colored in) . Decorative front and back covers. The cover has some wear and soiling. Marlborough 'with Compliments' slip laid in. This is a Catalogue of… an exhibition April- May 2002 at the Marlborough and Marlborough Chelsea galleries in New York City. Tom Otterness (born 1952) is an American sculptor who is one of America's most prolific public artists. Otterness's works adorn parks, plazas, subway stations, libraries, courthouses and museums around the world, notably in New York City's Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City and Life Underground in the 14th Street - Eighth Avenue New York Subway station. He contributed a balloon (a giant upside-down Humpty Dumpty) to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1994 he was elected as a member of the National Academy Museum. His style is often described as cartoonish and cheerful, but also political. His sculptures allude to sex, class, money and race. These sculptures depict, among other things, huge pennies, pudgy characters in business suits with moneybag heads, helmeted workers holding giant tools, and an alligator crawling out from under a sewer cover. His aesthetic can be seen as a riff on capitalist realism. Known primarily as a public artist, Otterness has exhibited across the United States and internationally, including New York City, Indianapolis, Beverly Hills, The Hague, Munich, Paris, Valencia and Venice. In 1987, Otterness exhibited his work The Tables at the Museum of Modern Art Projects show. White-collar workers, blue-collar workers, cops, radicals, captains of industry were displayed on four bronze picnic tables in the MoMA sculpture garden. The show traveled to the IVAM Centre Julio Gonzalez in Valencia, Spain; Portikus/Senckenbergmuseum in Frankfurt am Main; and Haags Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. From September 20, 2004 to March 18, 2005, Tom Otterness on Broadway, his largest exhibition to date, featured 25 different works installed between Columbus Circle and 168th Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan. The project was sponsored by the City of New York Parks and Recreation Department, the Broadway Mall Association, and Marlborough Gallery, and traveled to three other citiesâ"Indianapolis, Beverly Hills, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Grand Rapids exhibition featured more than 40 works across two miles of the city's downtown area and at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. He has been interested in public sculpture and in making his art available to as many people as possible, not only to those who visit art museums and galleries. For this reason, his work can be found in many outdoor locations and even subway platforms in New York City as well as other public places in this country and around the world. Otterness is best known for his figurative sculptures of plump, asymmetrical figures made of cast plaster or metal. His simplified forms and sense of humor create a universal language, understandable to everyone. He says many of his characters were inspired by comics from the 1930s, fairy tales and old legends, as well as current events. His sculpture Free Money, with its happy couple dancing on top of an enormous sack of money, is part of a series entitled Free Money and Other Fairy Tales. The Exhibition drew upon this series of sculptures.
