Zustand: Sehr gut. Einband leicht berieben. - The Sze Hong collection provides a unique glimpse into the origins of Chinese art, design, and decoration. Examination of the forty-three vessels presented here permits us to trace Chinese art from its beginnings at the hands of the Neolithic potter, through its development by the Shang and Zhou bronze caster, up to the creation of burial objects in the Han and Tang periods. This select group of objects, although not a comprehensive study of early Chinese art or the Sze Hong collection, tells of beauty and ritual in early China. The majority of these vessels were employed in ceremonial observances of their time. Some, such as the Shang and Zhou bronzes, were made for specific functions within ritual. Others, like many of the Neolithic jars, were apparently used for everyday storage before being entombed as attendant burial objects. Central China's later emphasis on solemn celebrations in every aspect of life reinforces the likelihood that these burial pieces were a part of a larger ritual. Similarly, Han and Tang objects created for burial clearly played a major role in ritual practices. Han and Tang objects of practical use might also have had a ritual function, for they too were placed in the tomb to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
