Located at the confluence of the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers, it is the largest city in Western North Carolina, and the state's 11th-most populous city. It is the principal city in the four-county Asheville metropolitan area. As we began this venture, we were aware that the multifaceted allure of Asheville, North Carolina, and its extraordinary history could never be contained in one volume. This city has maintained an into-the-future reputation since becoming an internationally famed health resort locale in the 1890s, and the luxury getaway for such famed Americans as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford. From stunning attractions including the Biltmore Estates, America's largest home, to the year-round pleasures that the city and intoxicating scenery offer, it's no wonder that transplants from around the country and the world base their dwelling choice on one reason: "the quality of life." This area sometimes called "The Land of the Sky" offers a four-season wonderland with attractions to suit any visitor, and no one passes through without stopping. How could they? Asheville is the kind of place that inspires people to say, "I wish I could live here!" Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House (or Biltmore Mansion), the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 sq ft of floor space (135,280 sq ft of living area). Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions. In the 1880s, at the height of the Gilded Age, George Washington Vanderbilt II began to make regular visits with his mother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt, to the Asheville area. He loved the scenery and climate so much that he decided to build a summer house in the area, which he called his "little mountain escape". His older brothers and sisters had built luxurious summer houses in places such as Newport, Rhode Island, the Gold Coast of Long Island, and Hyde Park, New York. Vanderbilt named his estate Biltmore, combining De Bilt (his ancestors' place of origin in the Netherlands) with more (Anglo-Saxon for "moor", an open, rolling land). Vanderbilt bought nearly 700 parcels of land, including over 50 farms and at least five cemeteries; a portion of the estate was once the community of Shiloh.
