Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 1867, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, commissioned the Galatea for a voyage around the world which would include the first royal visit to Australia. Stopping along the way in Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, Alfred was received with great ceremony at each port of call. These visits provided the ship's chaplain John Milner (1822-97) and the artist Oswald Brierly (1817-94) with ample material for this chronicle, published in 1869, which gives background details of each region alongside scenes from the tour, enhanced by illustrations based on Brierly's sketches. The authors drew on various recollections and writings, including a letter from Alfred to his brother describing an elephant hunt in South Africa. The tour was abruptly curtailed in Sydney when a Fenian sympathiser attempted to assassinate the prince, an act which boosted support for the British royal family.

He acknowledges receipt of a cheque for 35 guineas, for 'the small drawing of Constantinople', adding that 'Prince Hohenlohe called and saw it here today, and liked it very much'. He ends with the news that he has engaged 'Heffer to call here for it, & pack & send it to its destination'.

First edition; large folio (74x 54 cm); engraved dedication, 2pp. letterpress descriptive list of plates, 18 lithographic plates on 15 sheets coloured by a contemporary hand, no title issued, spotting to first plate, some minor staining to top margin; later dark blue half morocco, label to upper cover, corners bumped, binding a little worn, preserving one original wrapper bound in as title, a very good copy. Brierly's fine and rare series of plates of the English and French fleets in the Baltic, during the Crimean War. At the outbreak of the war, Sir Oswald Brierly joined Captain Henry Keppel as artist-observer on the man-of-war HMS St Jean d'Acre in the allied Baltic fleet. Brierley had previously accompanied Keppel on board HMS Maeander in the Pacific. The aim of this particular campaign was to bring Sweden into the war on the side of the allies, and also to pressure Russia to sue for peace over Sebastopol. In 1855 Brierly accompanied Keppel, in HMS Rodney, to the Black Sea and Sea of Azov; during this voyage he was often under enemy fire, and was subsequently awarded the Baltic and Crimean medals. Pair of colour lithographs, 375 x 535 mm. A fine pair of portraits of a splendid ship: these colour lithographs after original watercolours by Oswald Brierly were made by T. G. Dutton and printed by Day and Son for Ackermanns. The first print shows the Mæander in the Pacific, shortening sail in heavy weather; the caption dates the events to 9 July 1850; in the second the ship is coming slowly to anchor in Rio de Janeiro, and the scene is dated 9 June 1851. Both prints are dedicated to Henry Keppel, and the ship's officers. Oswald Brierly (1817-1894), the leading marine painter, had studied naval architecture. He sailed on numerous expeditions including the Rattlesnake voyage surveying the Barrier Reef, with Benjamin Boyd on the Wanderer, and on the Galatea with the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867. Brierly joined Henry Keppel on H.M.S. Mæander after his voyage on the Rattlesnake and visited New Zealand, Tahiti and South America, returning to England in July 1851. A description of the voyage is given in Admiral Keppel's A Sailor's Life Under Four Sovereigns (London, 1899). .
