Zustand: Good. 1933. First Edition. 248 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth with gilt lettering. Noticeable foxing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Light cracking, creasing and staining to gutters; some very slight looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Cloth is heavily worn, marked, rubbed at edges and rounded spine, rounded at corners and spine ends. Text block edges dull and darkened. Some occasional spotting throughout. Some pages have minor damage at edges, one or two are creased, with the odd strained gutter, one leaf partially loose. Not a pretty copy but a good reading/reference source. Henry Chance Newton (1854-1931) was a British writer, and theatre critic, often writing under the pen names Carados or Gawain.

Large fold out table to rear. Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing. Fold out is in good condition but has a couple of creases. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Moderate crushing to spine ends, with splitting, fraying and loss to the head, tail and joints. Moderate tanning to spine. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains.

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Original colour illustrated cord tied wraps 15x20cm. (40)pp including the programme, texts, adverts, and several full-page b/w photos. Wraps good. Interiors good only, faintly damp stained to the edges with some edges scuffed where they were pulled apart, with the facing torn edges neatly trimmed though not affecting content. Artistic Director Rene Blum and impressario Wassily de Basil formed the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in 1932 to continue Diaghilev's work. After they fell out, Blum formed the Ballets de Monte Carlo out of this in 1936, with Fokine as his choreographer. This presentation was one of 8 that took place during 15-20 June 1936. Its repertoire included Les Sylphides, Carnaval, Le Spectre de la Rose, and Prince Igor, with some of the sets and costumes designed by Leon Bakst. The photo portraits include Stoll, Fokine, Blum, Vera Nemtchinova, Leon Woizikovsky, Anatole Vilzak, Marie Ruanova, Anatole Oboukhoff, Andre Eglevsky, Helene Kirsova, and Michel Panaieff. Stoll was the Chair and Managing Director of the Alhambra Theatre. This would be one of its last performances, as it was demolished a few months later to make way for the Odeon.

Sir Oswald Stoll, the Australian-born British theatre impresario and manager whose holdings at one time included the Hackney Empire and the London Coliseum, was a philanthropist as well as a businessman. Committed to the help of servicemen returning from the First World War, disabled after active service, Stoll set up what was originally called the War Seal Foundation in 1917, funded by the sale of selling 'war seal', a stamp used to seal letters. The success of the war seal sale led eventually to the creation, in Fulham, London, of the War Seal Mansions, around 140 apartments for seriously wounded ex-servicemen and their families, provided with a medical centre, a chemist, a workshop and a gymnasium. This development earned Stoll his knighthood, and was renamed in his honour as the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation Stoll. Stoll's books on economics and finance were seen as heretical by contemporaries. They, and particularly The People's Credit, nevertheless championed an understanding of the public, rather than the banks, as the stakeholders who should be in control of financial transactions, and the beneficiaries of the deriving profits.
