Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good + overall. Third edition with additions. Folio, published in November 1897 with 18 hand colored maps, including a title page on the key map. This is the third edition of the atlas according to the Library of Congress Census, the first edition being published in 1886 but with only 13 sheets. The second edition was published in 1891 with an extra 2 sheet making a total of 16 sheets. Small private library stamp on the verso of the key map. There are very small pencil annotations on the maps obviously by F.J. Washburn the local insurance agent. Originating in London in the mid 18th century insurance maps had become invaluable in the US in the 1860's when Sanborn started work. The company started to standardize the maps and publish them in atlases under the town or city. Each map/sheet measures 21 x 25" and is drawn to a scale of 50 feet to an inch, with color applied by hand at the time of publication. Every atlas records all town buildings shown to scale, its construction material and use noted, as well as fire-proofing, thickness of walls, elevators, chimneys, fire alarm boxes, hydrants, sprinkler systems and a wealth of other detail. Ultimately Sanborn produced maps and atlases for 12,000 locations. Being so specific, the demand was very slight. The Library of Congress estimates that there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single sheet so production was small and usually produced for a specific Insurance company or agent. Because of this, a very small number of copies of any atlas are offered on the market today. The maxim "if it turns up buy it because you won't find another copy" springs to mind. Folio, maroon leather spine with printed hard boards, rubbed but edges.

Zustand: Very good. - The December 1, 1969 letter fills one side of an 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of Medical Correctional Association letterhead with the names & addresses of officers, including Ralph S. Banay as President, printed at the top. Signed "Ralph". The bottom right corner of the letter is creased. A staple is inserted at top left, affecting Banay's printed name & address. Together with an unsigned carbon copy of the recipient's reply. Of Banay's 3 follow-up letters, 2 are also typed on Medical Correctional Association letterhead and 1 on Banay's personal letterhead. All three are signed "Ralph". Also included are 2 unsigned carbon copies of letters from Banay to Medical Correctional Association colleagues. The four signed letters are folded twice for mailing and are in very good condition. Banay's four signed letters are addressed to Freudian psychiatrist and criminologist Dr. Arthur N. Foxe. In the initial letter Banay complains that in the current state and federal government debates on the problem of crime and its solution doctors "are pushed out of the picture because they are not vocal and have no organization behind them." Banay believes a new organization should be formed "I would suggest the title of The American Association of Physicians, Psychologists and Social Workers Concerned with Crime, Its Causes, Treatment and Prevention, Inc. It should be a top notch group which would be effective enough to reach federal and state government authorities." Foxe writes back approving of the idea but suggesting the organization's title should be shortened. The other signed letters follow up on this proposal. The additional unsigned carbon copies, on the same subject, are to Nathan K. Rickles and Maier I. Tuchler of the Medical Correctional AssociationHungarian-born psychiatrist Ralph S. Banay [1896-1970] came to America in 1927. He held a number of medical, psychiatric and educational posts, including at Manhattan Eastern State Hospital, Boston Eastern State Hospital, Sing Sing Prison, Columbia University and Greenmont-on-Hudson Sanatorium. He was also involved in projects dealing with the problems of drugs and alcohol.

Auction map for the sale of the historic A. E. Robinson estate, located in current day Ossining (then Sing Sing) between State Street in the east, the Hudson River in the west, Orchard Street in the south, and Main Street in the north. World Cat locates no copy of this map; not recorded in the Library of Congress or the David Rumsey Map Collection. The mansion, known as the Smith Robinson House, still exists today at 34 State Street in Ossining. The mansion was built in the 1840s by local business man James Smith, and was later purchased by James Robinson another Sing Sing wealthy landowner. The map shows Lot No. 1 with a lovely little illustration of the mansion's facade labeled "Mansion of White Marble, 50 x 50 ft", on 2 1/2 acres, with lot No. 2 on 1 3/4 acres boasting a gardener's house, coach house (both illustrated), poultry house, stable yard and a lovely wooded area behind, "Shady Grove". There are 14 numbered lots in all, with Hunter Street running behind lots 1 & 2, and "Land of the Late James Smith" shown south of lot 12. Going west toward the Hudson, are lots 12 to 14, with lots 13 &14 adjacent to the Hudson River RR site to the west and the Purdy lot to the north. The Robinson mansion was clad in marble quarried from Sing Sing prison, and boasted 24 rooms, with an attic and an observatory. The parlors on the north side of the house were 50 feet long, with sliding mahogany doors, and the main hall was 12 to 15 feet wide presumably to accommodate the wide hoop skirts of the well to do ladies of the day. The subtitle of the map continues: "The splendid marble mansion with Coach House, Gardener's House & c. & c. & c. and from 2 1/2 to 5 acres of land attached. Also several building lots of various sizes, from 1/4 to 1 acre each, all commanding fine views of the Hudson River and surrounding country, and within 5 minutes walk of the Steam Boat Landing & Rail Road Depot. Also a fine dock, Brick Store, Store House & Coal & Lumber Yard & c." 19 1/2 x 16". Trimmed close at the left edge, laid down on heavier stock, period folds flattened, minor cracks at a few folds.
