Leather. Zustand: Very Good. A fascinating landmark of Romantic and Celtic literature, this illustrated pocket edition of The Poems of Ossian still sparks debate about its origins. In the publisher's original full calf binding. This edition is the second volume. This pocket edition is a landmark of Romantic literature and the Celtic revival, though it faces controversy over the authenticity of its origins.Illustrated with detailed engravings throughout.Scholars and critics have debated whether Macpherson had actually translated ancient poetry, from collecting word-of-mouth material in Scottish Gaelic, or whether he created original works in the guise of ancient lore. The prevailing conclusion is that Macpherson largely created the poems himself, drawing in part on traditional Gaelic poetry from his own collection. The Poems of Ossian are a cycle of epic poems from Ossian, a legendary 3rd-century Scottish bard and the son of the warrior-hero Fingal. Revered by figures such as Goethe, Napoleon, and Wordsworth. Napoleon reportedly carried a copy into battle, and Thomas Jefferson considered Ossian superior to Homer. In the publisher's original full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, particularly the corners and joints. Rubbing to boards and spine. The odd handling mark to boards. Offsetting with the odd spot to endpapers. Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages age toned, with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge. Slight offsetting to pages facing engravings. Otherwise, pages bright and clean. Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Zustand: Aceptable. Second volume of James Imray's pocket edition of the Ossianic poems attributed to the legendary Gaelic bard Ossian and translated—or substantially recreated—by James Macpherson. The volume contains heroic and elegiac narratives rooted in an imagined ancient Scottish past, including poems such as Oithona, Croma and Cath-Loda. Warriors, kings, spectral presences, lost loves and desolate Highland landscapes combine in a highly atmospheric prose-poetry style that had a decisive influence on European Pre-Romanticism and Romanticism. The edition includes preliminary dissertations concerning the supposed age and origins of Ossian's poems and is embellished with engraved plates. Encuadernación de época en media piel, con planos de papel marmoleado, lomo liso con filetes dorados y título estampado Volume II only. Copy with an illustrated bookplate by Rafael Alberti, bearing the printed text "Ex-libris JORDAN" and the signature "R. Alberti", pasted onto the front endpaper. Contemporary ownership marks may also be present.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Thus. First edition thus. Hardback, two volumes (complete). Half leather binding, marbled paper covered boards. Spines with gilt titling and blindstamped design. Each 22 × 13.5cm. lxix [3], 579pp, ii + 634pp. James Macpherson had published the original Ossian poems in the 1760s, claiming they were translations of ancient third-century Gaelic epics. A fierce debate over their authenticity raged for decades (most famously with Dr. Samuel Johnson). Malcolm Laing used his introduction and notes in this 1805 Ballantyne edition to present a exhaustive line-by-line critical analysis. He tracked Macpherson's sources, showing direct parallels to Classical poets (Homer, Virgil), the Bible, Milton, Shakespeare, and Gray. Laing's rigorous commentary in this edition effectively dealt the decisive blow to claims of Ossian's ancient Celtic origin, establishing for the wider scholarly public that the work was largely Macpherson's own modern invention. As well as Laing's introduction, these books contain Ossian's poetical works including Fingal, Comala, War of Caros, Conlath and Cuthona, Temora etc. Condition: Both books are in good condition for age. There is some marking to the leather and rubbing to the corners. There is light and intermittent foxing throughout but most pages clean. The frontispiece portrait to volume one is starting to work loose but still attached. Both books remain in strong readable condition.…
