Gutes Exemplar; Umschlag mit minimalen Läsuren; Einband stw. minimal berieben. - Englisch. - In the past decade there has been a remarkable upsurge of interest in good handwriting and its more formal cousin, calligraphy, and in their origins. With the invention of printing in the fifteenth century, the writing-master came into his own: for the first time he was able to broadcast his models and instructions to the world in 'writing books' - which have been much admired for their beauty. Many have survived, the most important being written in Latin, Italian or Spanish, but few have been adequately translated. Scribes and Sources has fulfilled a long-standing need by providing translations of all the basic texts in a single volume with a detailed biographical and technical commentary. It is the first large-scale and systematic collection of its kind. The scene is set with descriptions of the social forces that led in the sixteenth century to the demand for trained secretaries to man the swelling bureaucracy in the chanceries and courts of Europe. After two dialogues on handwriting as seen through the eyes of the educationalists, Erasmus and Vives, the book is then devoted entirely to the writing-masters themselves and the way they taught the italic hand. The instructions of Tagliente, Vicentino (Arrighi), Palatino, Mercator, Hondius and Brun are given in full; there are substantial excerpts from Fanti, Cresci, Augustino da Siena, Yciar, Lucas, Madariaga and Juan de la Cuesta; and Pierre Hamon, Jacques de la Rue, Caspar Neff and Clement Perret are also discussed. A chapter by Berthold Wolpe on John de Beauchesne, author of the first English writing-book, and a full translation of the acrimonious debate between Cresci and Scalzini complete this absorbing book. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. Gerard Mercator is generally conceded to be the greatest geographer of the 16th century. Every schoolboy knows Mercator's Projection. His skill as an engraver and letterer is, perhaps, less widely known, though professional calligraphers have long admired his little treatise on the italic script with wood-blocks cut by himself, which was published in 1540. Dr A. S. Osley has examined the origins of the italic hand in the Netherlands as well as Mercator's own practice. He demonstrates the influence which Mercator's revolutionary example exercised in the Low Countries not only on the lettering of maps and globes, but also on book production, scientif?c instruments and picture engraving.

Mit 68 Abbildungen und über 50 Tafeln. XXIII, 286 S., 1 Bl. Orig.-Leinen (ohne den Schutzumschlag). 25,5 : 19,5 cm. * "Calligraphy and Palaeography is a collection of zwenty-seven essays which savants from the U.S.A., Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Britain have contributed to honour the seventieth birthday of Alfred Fairban, C.B.E., himself on of the most distinguished calligraphers of our time and pioneer of the revival of italic handwriting. A section devoted to palaeography includes original work by Professor B. L. Ullman, who adds another piece to his grand mosaic of humanistic scripts; Professor F. Wormald, who discusses a tenth-century lectionary; and Dr. R. W. Hunt, who writes a fascinating account of a Pliny which used to belong the scribe Coluccio Salutati. Other essays are devoted to famous writingmasters - Arrighi, Mercator, Cocker, Hodgkin and Benjamin Franklin Foster. John Dreyfus relates a little known anecdote about Oscar Wilde. Professor Godeffrey Tillotson reminisces on how the italic hand came to him in Oxford in the twenties, Paul Standard on how to New York and Bent Rohde on its spread to Denmark. There is also a selection of work from the quarterly journal of the Society for Italic Handwriting." (Verlag). - Mit Index. - Sehr gut erhalten.
