Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: The Karakorans and Kashmir: An Account of a Journey by Oscar Eckenstein (18581921) recounts his 1892 expedition through the Karakoram range and Kashmir. Combining letters and diary notes, he describes routes from Srinagar via Skardu and the Baltoro Glacier toward K2, detailing terrain, local cultures, and logistical challenges. Eckenstein's technical observations and mountaineering insights make this a pioneering Himalayan travelogue. The work highlights early exploration, adventure, and the region's geographical significance during colonial times . About The Author: Oscar Eckenstein (18581921) was a British mountaineer, engineer, and pioneering climbing innovator. Known for his technical skill and unorthodox methods, he contributed significantly to the development of modern mountaineering. Eckenstein designed an improved version of the crampon, which revolutionized ice climbing. He also played a key role in early Himalayan exploration and was part of a 1902 expedition to K2. Though sometimes controversial, he is remembered as a bold thinker who advanced both climbing techniques and equipment design. Eckenstein joined Sir Martin Conway's expedition to the Karakoram in 1892, together with C.G. Bruce, Mattias Zurbiggen, the artist A.D. McCormick, and J.H. Roudebush. Due to internal disagreements, Eckenstein left the expedition before it culminated. This work details Eckenstein's experiences during the expedition, from April to August of '92. An account was also published by Conway, however Eckenstein's remains the far scarcer of the two volumes. Eckenstein was an innovator in developing both climbing technique and equipment - he was the inventor of the modern crampon, for instance. He was also a bouldering pioneer; in Kashmir, he conducted bouldering competitions for locals, perhaps the first example of what have become a common phenomenon. After the Karakoram Expedition detailed within this volume, Eckenstein would go on to lead the first serious attempt to ascent K2 in 1902. Full title: The Karakorams and Kashmir. An account of a journey. Provenance: From the library of Warwick H. Williams.

Eckenstein (1859 â" 1921), was a member of the expedition led by Sir Martin Conway to the Baltoro Muztagh region in 1892. Unfortunately Conway and Eckenstein did not get on, and Eckenstein withdrew from the expedition after six months. In Kashmir, he conducted bouldering contests for the locals - a form of free climbing without the use of ropes or harnesses. Eckenstein collected his letters and diary notes from this expedition into the present book. Nowadays he is best known as the inventor of the modern crampon and as an innovator in climbing technique and mountaineering equipment. He was the leader of the first serious expedition to attempt to climb K2. Yakushi E10.
