See images for condition. About the book >.>.> The recovery of Thomas Whythorne's Book of Songs and Sonetts is a propitious event from every point of view. To the literary historian it adds a new Tudor poet and the earliest 'modern' autobiography in English. To the social historian it provides new evidence of the manners and customs of our Elizabethan ancestors. To the musicologist it offers first-hand testimony of the way one professional music teacher and composer lived and wrote. It comes at a time when interest in Elizabethan poetry, history, and music is at its height: biographies of Queen Eliza-beth are in demand around the globe, a fat book on the Spanish Armada stands high on the best-seller lists, the interpretation of Shakespeare has become virtually an industry, and the madrigals of Whythorne's younger contemporaries-Morley, Byrd, Dow-land, and others are beloved by increasing thousands, thanks to the availability of electronic recordings. Besides its value as a new source of knowledge about the Elizabethan Age, the Autobi.

Original brochure. Zustand: Gut. 25 p., Frontispiece Thomas Whythoren. Cover slightly bumped, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: In the literary world of the mid-twentieth century, autobiography has become an accepted genre. Nearly every list of best-sellers includes one or more autobiographies. Rarely does a statesman, a general, or other public figure retire to the hammock of ease without busying himself in writing his autobiography, extended to as many successive volumes as his publisher calculates the market will bear. More than one national hero has discovered on retirement that his life story is his chief financial asset: for example, when General Eisenhower resigned from the Armed Forces, he sold his Crusade in Europe to the publishers for the lump sum of $630,000. (Treasury authorities accepted the transaction as a capital gain, so that he paid only 25% of this amount in taxes.) In selling his recollections, General Eisenhower emulated the well-known example of his predecessor, Ulysses S. Grant, whose Personal Memoirs outsold contemporary fiction and brought in half a million dollars in the days when a dollar was awesomely spoken of as The Almighty.
