Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. RUDYARD KIPLING THE BRUSHWOOD BOY 1899 EARLY REPRINT ILLUSTRATIONS BY O. LOWELL NICE. I am very pleased to offer a very nice copy of one of Rudyard Kipling s early works: The Brushwood Boy, illustrated by Orson Lowell. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 119 pages) was published by the Doubleday and McClure Company of New York, dated 1899 and according to my research, the First American Edition. The book is bound in dark green boards with silver & gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine. There are about 35 illustrations opening with a tissue-guarded color frontispiece (please see the photos). The endpapers are decorated with a leafy motif and the top edge is gilt. I was tempted to add an excerpt about Kipling from Wikipedia but I am sure that anyone interested in the book is already well aware of him. The citation on Wikipedia, however, is extensive and almost as interesting as one of his books. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers show a fair bit of rubbing and bumping but nothing too extreme. The gilt titles are still bright and prominent. Inside, there is a faded, inked gift inscription on the half-title but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages are clean and bright throughout and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding feels tight and sound but is also cracked in several places between sheaths of pages. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
