About the book >.>.> Almost the size of india, Kazakhstan has an ecological diversity that will take the traveller from the snow-capped Tien Shan through parched desert steppes across a myriad of wetlands and even into the fringes of Siberia. Its 498 recorded species are surely awaiting many additions. Until its independence in 1991, it was not easy for the inquisitive Western birder to explore Kazakhstan. Most visits had to be accompanied by a Russian guide and were largely confined to the mountains and plains around Almaty and the central steppes and lakes south of Astana (then Tselinograd). Nor was it easy to keep up to date with the Kazakhstan ornithological literature unless well versed in Russian. I remember a friend of mine-a regular visitor to the country-who had to turn to unorthodox methods, rely-ing on Russian hostesses to translate important papers for him. My interest in the Middle East brought with it an inquisitiveness to know what was happening in the neighbouring countries and soon Kazakhstan was high on the list of places I had to vi.
