Sixteen delightful small porcelain spinning tops measuring 2.0 x 1.7cm in size each accompanied by ten handsome colour printed product labels heightened in gilt with soft purple cord ties (8.3 x 6cm). An intriguing collection of sake advertising ephemera in very good condition. These sake promotional giveaways and accompanying die-cut cards in the shape of the Order of the Golden Kite are advertisements associated with Meiyo-gura, a sake brand sold in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. The advertisement describes a koma (spinning top), attached beneath the bottle top, which could also serve as a small entertainment item. Each koma was hexagonal and could be used as a dice or a novelty accessory for drinking games. The value printed on the koma could be redeemed if customers presented both the koma and the accompanying medal card. These redemption promotions were available between 1937 and 1939. However, in June 1941, the rationing of sake was introduced, firmly ending such promotional schemes. The product labels, which were finely printed as these are, also informed customers about how to claim these discounts, further enhancing the appeal of the product during its promotional period. A curious example of the everyday cultural impacts of Japanese militarism - the Order of the Golden Kite was an award exclusively for military service, and was not available to the civilian public. Over the course of the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars, the order would be awarded over 140,000 times, dwarfing all previous conflicts, and reflecting the frenetic nature of Japan's total mobilisation.…

Handsome dark brown crushed morocco tooled in gilt and blind by the Club Bindery for Robert Hoe (stamp-signed and dated 1903 on front turn-in and with Hoe's monogram on front pastedown), covers with frame of double gilt rules enclosing repeated blind-stamped medallions, central panel with blind-ruled lozenge and rectangle, the latter with oblique gilt fleurons at corners, raised bands, spine compartments ruled in blind, with gilt fleuron centerpiece and gilt floral buds at corners, gilt lettering, vellum endleaves, all edges gilt (tiny, invisible repairs at top of spine and front joint). With two full-page armorial engravings by Cornelius Galle, one the arms of the Spanish monarch, the other the insignia of the Order, engraved head- and tailpieces. Boards slightly bowed (as almost inevitable with vellum books), text a bit wavy (also as expected), occasional faint smudges or dustsoiling at edges, but AN EXTREMELY PLEASING COPY, the vellum creamy and bright, the binding very lustrous. This is the luxurious vellum printing of the rules of the Order of the Golden Fleece, bound in 16th century style for the renowned bibliophile Robert Hoe by the workshop he co-founded and supervised for much of its existence. Founded in 1429 by Philip, Duke of Burgundy, the exclusive Order of the Golden Fleece was the most distinguished knighthood in the Holy Roman Empire, being limited to just 24 members. Its primary purpose was to preserve and protect the Catholic faith, as well as to uphold the 12 knightly virtues outlined by Philip: Faith, Charity, Justice, Sagacity, Prudence, Temperance, Resolution, Truth, Liberality, Diligence, Hope, and Valor. Those deserving to be collared with the order's golden necklace (featuring an appended ram that gave the group its name) swore to support their monarch militarily, and in return they were exempt from taxes as well as being entitled to be tried for any crimes by a jury restricted to their fellow knights. The "Rules" or "Statutes" that make up the text here dictate the (very strict) obligations and behavioral guidelines for its members, including proscriptions against such things as fleeing a battle out of cowardice or embracing beliefs antithetical to the Church, along with a number of procedural decrees governing, for example, how, exactly, to participate in ceremonial occasions. The earliest Latin edition of the "Constitutiones," translated from the French by the secretary of the Order, Flemish poet Nicolaus Grudius (1504-70), was printed by Guillaume Silvius at the Plantin Press in 1566. In total, four vellum editions were issued over the next 200 years, all now rare. The present copy collates as the 1626 edition issued by Balthasar Moretus, which the Belgian national bibliography tells us was printed for the king of Spain with 50 copies on vellum and 25 on paper. Our copy was bound in 1903 for Robert Hoe (1839-1909), a founder of the Grolier Club and one of the world's great book collectors. After Grolier was established in 1884, it soon became apparent that the country's few established hand binders were overtaxed in providing repairs and rebinding for the club members' rapidly accumulating acquisitions. As a consequence, in 1895, Grolier members, along with Edwin Holden and other wealthy collectors, established the Club Bindery in order to attract European craftsmen to provide, close to home, fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The Club Bindery was in operation until 1909, with Hoe being its most influential manager and client. It provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectation.…

This is Dawson Lawrence's 1897 chromolithographic broadside produced for the Knights of the Golden Eagle and printed by Sackett and Wilhelms. A Closer Look This striking broadside contains complex allegorical imagery related to the fraternal order, heavily influenced by Christian symbolism, including references to the Crusades. The broadside depicts rituals taking place in several levels of the castle, with the different levels representing the three degrees in the order. The levels of the castle parallel a struggle between good and evil, and relies heavily on Crusader imagery. At the bottom three levels, paintings on the walls behind the figures reinforce the concept of battles, both literal and figurative, while at right are additional depictions of group rituals, likely for initiates. Abbreviations on several altars on the various levels refer to values of the Knights of the Golden Eagle and associated fraternal orders like the Odd Fellows (such as 'F.H.C.' for fidelity, honor, charity). On the top level of the castle are a group of women engaged in rituals, likely meant to represent the female auxiliaries of the Knights, called the Ladies of the Golden Eagle. Although Christian imagery predominates, atop the castle are references to the American Republic, including the American flag, a flag with an eagle, and the dome on top of the castle with an eagle. Knights of the Golden Eagle The Knights of the Golden Eagle was a fraternal organization founded in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1873. It was initially established as a mutual aid society, offering support such as insurance benefits, funeral assistance, and camaraderie to its members, many of whom were working-class men. The order blended fraternal ritual with a chivalric theme, drawing inspiration from medieval knights and emphasizing virtues like fidelity, valor, and charity. Structurally, it was organized into local 'Castles,' regional 'Grand Castles,' and a national 'Supreme Castle.' Membership was restricted to Christian men who pledged to uphold moral conduct and mutual assistance. At its height in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Knights of the Golden Eagle had a significant presence, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic states, but like many fraternal groups of the era, it declined sharply after World War I (1914 - 1918), with its last bastions being among the working-class miners and steelworkers of Eastern Pennsylvania. It was defunct by the 1960s. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History and Census This broadside was copyrighted to Dawson Lawrence of South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, likely its designer, in 1897, and was printed by Sackett and Wilhelms.
