The first modern account of the family, by Schindler (a 'splitter'), was prepared in Europe from inadequate dried material; the author was able to study fresh material of many groups in New Zealand as well as specimens from an impressive 42+ herbaria. Especially the chronological list of Australian algae publications and descriptions is quite useful, but the work can also be seen as a fine introduction to the algae of the world.
