The first urban planning report on partial conservation and rebuilding of the charred ruins of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in central France, burnt on 10th June 1944 during a massacre of its population by retreating units of the SS Division Das Reich , an atrocity intended to deter French civilian attacks after the D-Day landings. The large detailed topographical plan for reconstruction, approved on 13th April 1947 by the Limoges urbanist, Charles Dorian, sets out guide lines for preserving the ruins of the village as a shaded area; existing cemeteries are indicated with adjoining larger areas of additional burial grounds for the martyrs in a necropolis; houses and streets a laid out as zones of habitation for an adjacent new model town including sports centres, recreation grounds and green areas; possibilities for future expansion are marked with urban boundaries. Published in Limoges, the nearest large city. as a testimony of the horrors of war in France with the object of raising funds for the erection of a commemorative monument to honour the martyred population. The photographs show the appearance of buildings before and after annihilation and two of charred human remains.
