Engraving of the British factories at Canton (Guangzhou) and a scarce battle plan prepared for "The Illustrated London News" depicting the events of November 12 & 13, 1856, the Battle of the Bogue, by British-led forces during the Second Opium War. The commentary notes the Russian criticism of the British action, quoting a "letter from St. Petersburg" in the French "Journal des Débats". Clearly writing in reference to his 1899 autobiography 'A Sailor's Life under Four Sovereigns', he states that he is glad that Willis is 'pleased with the book', and explains that he was 'suddenly driven' to Cannes 'by neuralgic pains'. He concludes: 'If I live to get back I should like to insert the Authors name in your Copy! Your sincere old friend | Harry Keppel'.

Three engravings on a double newspaper leaf (the main image 16.5 x 51.3 cm), with complete associated text, central fold, a few minor edge tears and two central fold splits (neatly sealed on the verso), but in very good condition. Engravings depicting the Battle of Canton (Guangzhou), 28-31 December, 1857, led by joint British and French forces during the Second Opium War, prepared for "The Illustrated London News". The main engraving shows the bombardment from the Harbour with the European Factories still in tact, by artist and engraver Richard Principal Leitch (his signature is reversed in the image) who worked for "The Illustrated London News" for over 30 years from the 1840s.
