Clark 1851 Bound up from the original 24 numbered parts, this is the second edition of this Penny Dreadful style publication with 24 illustrations if you include the portrait of the author and the extra engraved title page, bound in what appears to be the original cloth titled in gilt to the spine, book is just under 9 inches tall, 380 pages. A Dark Novel of Embezzlement, Financial Corruption, a descent into Crime, Attempted Murder and Social Ruin. CONDITION The covers are generally darkened with edge wear, splits to cloth along spine edges, internally heavy foxing to many of the plates, lighter foxing to some of the text pages, some evidence of the original blue paper covers to inner edge of last page (see pictures) else in good general condition.

Light scattered foxing throughout, minor wear to lower corner tips. A nice near fine copy. ; Octavo.

Engr. title & 12 uncoloured plates loose as issued in orig. green printed wrappers; edges of wrappers a little chipped & creased. With an advertisement written by Albert Jackson, explaining that the designs were intended for the Cheap Edition of Pickwick, published in 1847, but were not used as Onwhyn's original illustrations for the 1837 were reissued instead: 'Onwhyn. relinquished the idea of issuing the new set, and their existence was lost sight of. They have, however, been recently rediscovered by the Onwhyn family. and are now printed and published for the first time'.

Onwhyn, and some are signed by Peter Palette. Very good to fine, with light foxing on the portrait of Nicholas Nickleby.

Zustand: Very Good. Octavo, 31 plates by Onwhyn; unbound, loose individual plates contained in an old edge worn envelope, printed with the return address of Zaehnsdorf. A few plates with minor spotting, but generally very good.

Original illustrated pink cloth with yellow endpapers; cloth quite soiled and bubbled, front hinge just starting, yet plates with minimal toning and foxing. A good, sound, unsophisticated copy and very scarce complete in the original cloth. ß Thomas Onwhyn's additional illustrations for Dickens's Pickwick Papers, intended to be bound into copies of the novel and very uncommonly found as a set in wrappers or, as here, bound in cloth. Onwhyn's additional 32 illustrations were issued in eight parts, for the most part signed with the pseudonym Samuel Weller, but some bear Onwhyn's initials. Additional illustrations were published for many of Dickens's successful novels. "Whether by the same or rival publishers, extra-illustrations became part of the marketing of his works. the early sets participated in the periodicity of Dickens's monthly publications in that they were also published in monthly parts to be completed with the completion of the text; they were advertised on the wrappers and in the Advertisers" (Luisa CalÈ, "Dickens Extra-Illustrated: Heads and Scenes in Monthly Parts", The Yearbook of English Studies, vol. 40, nos. 1/2, 2010.) See also OCLC 28011324: "First plate has same illustration as cover, but without number of plates and price at head, without artist's pseudonym, and with a different date in imprint at foot: Decr. 9, 1837 on t.p., Novr. 30, 1837 in imprint on first plate.". Signed.

First edition thus. Thomas Onwhyn designed 32 illustrations to accompany The Pickwick Papers, which were published in 1837. In 1847, Onwhyn began to design a set of 12 etchings to accompany the new cheap edition of Pickwick. However his 1837 illustrations were reissued as lithographs, and he abandoned the project. The family sold the etchings to Albert Jackson, who reissued them in various formats in 1894, two of these formats present here. It is possible that F. W. Pailthorpe hand-coloured the etchings in the first copy - a pencilled note in the chemise states thus. Gimbel H1130. 2 copies in variant states, small folio. Each with etched pictorial title-page and 12 plates by Thomas Onwhyn, the first copy with the plates coloured by hand, the second copy with proof impressions on India paper mounted on card. Loose sheets as issued in original green printed wrappers. Housed together in a red cloth chemise within red cloth slipcase, spine lettered in gilt. Very light peripheral creasing, else fine copies.
