A good copy.Fourteenth edition overall (first: Venice 1582) of this extremely successful play, but first with the intermedii, which replace Ongaro's prologue and choral songs. This edition is dedicated to Cardinal Serra by Baldini (from Ferrara, last day of February 1614). In the printer's foreword, Baldini states that Enzo Bentivogli planned a performance fifteen months earlier and he put together an edition including these intermedii. But the plans were postponed and the intermedii were performed with the tragedy Idalba instead. However, Baldini is publishing the intermedii with Alceo, as originally planned. First edition thus: an interesting edition, of importance in theatrical history. Ongaro's work had been first publ…ished in 1582, but this edition is considerably expanded to include an intermezzo between each act. These must have been written shortly before his death by the leading contemporary Ferrarese poet, Giovanni Battista Guarini (author of Il Pastor Fido), who had died in October 1612; the first performance had been intended for later that year, but plans were changed and the intermezzi appeared instead in a performance of Veniero's tragedy Hidalba (first published 1596). This edition is the first publication of the intermezzi, and represents the version that Bentivoglio had projected. This is clearly a collaborative effort with several authors, as not only were Ongaro and Guarini involved, but the dedication is by the printer, Baldini (who also wrote an address to the reader), but the very detailed descriptions of the intermezzi are probably by Ottavio Magnanini (1574-1652), who wrote under the name of l'Arsiccio Ricreduto. Provenance. Stamps of the Colonna family (in red, and not unattractive) on title page and elsewhere; bookplate of Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976), scholar of world drama (his library was sold in Malvern in August 2006).
