Letters documenting struggles with epidemics in the Wallingford Community, a branch of the Oneida Community with a printing press. The community debated removing from Wallingford, but remained to maintain their printing operation, and fought the disease by acquiring a Turkish bath. The letters claim that the community's spiritual struggle "substantially expelled the spiritual virus (ignorantly called malaria)" (p.16). NOT IN WELLS; NOT IN DARE. William Hepworth Dixon had visited the Oneida Community in 1866 and published descriptions of it in 1867 and 1868. Noyes complained that Dixon's "picture of the Community is as 'strange and ludicrous to the Community as it is to the general reader '" (Wells p.12). Very good, fresh condition, right edge of front wrapper and title page with 3/4" tear. Printed by the Oneida Community. Rear with advertisements for several publications by John Humphrey Noyes, including a guide to "Male Continence, or Self Control in Sexual Intercourse." Despite the reputation of the community for "free love," a term in fact coined by Noyes, recent scholarship shows that sexual activity was paradoxically tightly controlled in a hierarchical manner by Noyes.
