B/w map 17x27cm, at least partially hand-drawn with black felt tip, which is coming through to the verso, stickers laid on, and related newspaper clipping dated 13 Dec 1972 to the verso, which shows the lower part of the final version of the map in colour, as it appeared in print. Good with glue residue to the borders. The story was published in SvD (Svenska Dagbladet) with reporting by Omar Magnergard. It describes how "after decades of painful stagnation, development has accelerated" thanks to the modernising influence of Sultan Qaboos. This follows the overthrow of his father in 1970, who had wanted to maintain traditions such as locking the city gates at night, and illuminating faces with kerosene lamps. But Qaboos is running out of money, and looking for new sources of oil. A caption to the map clipping states that Oman was closed to foreigners (except oilmen and the British) until 1970. They even now restrict foreign visitors, and SvD's emissary was the first Swedish journalist to obtain a visa. The map shows important locations including Buraimi, Sohar, Rustaq, Sumail, Salala, and the pipeline connecting the oilfields at Fahud to the coast near Muscat.
