First and last few leaves are significantly chipped at edges, and detached from text block. Outer leaves toned and lightly spotted. Backstrip cracked. Signatures loosening, with a couple of detached pages chipped and chapped at edges. A few manuscript marginal annotations in a contemporary hand, relevant to the text (such as naming characters alluded to in the text, or confirming dates of events etc). 12mo. A work first published in 1832, the title page of this reissue states "This is a faithful reprint of a work, which produced an extraordinary sensation on its first appearance fifty-one years ago, and was speedily suppressed. It is the same, too, for which the sum of a Thousand Pounds was offered in New York about nine years ago." In fact, the work is by Olivia Serres, a British painter and writer, also known as an imposter who claimed the title of Princess Olive of Cumberland. Serres was a friend of Lady Anne Hamilton. In 1832, Hamilton, a lady-in waiting to Queen Caroline, wrote 'The Authentic Records of the Court of England for the Last Seventy Years'. It contained may accusations of scandal and salaciousness, and her publisher, J Phillips was prosecuted and convicted for its publication. Phillips fled into exile. Serres then produced an expanded version of Hamilton's text, adding more scandals, accusations of financial malpractice and criminal activity, including murder, which was published in two volumes under the title 'The Secret History of the Court of England' and still credited to Lady Anne Hamilton. For her part, Lady Anne disclaimed the work. 'Secret History', as 'The Authentic Record' before it, was suppress in the UK but widely reprinted in the United States. Offered for rebinding or reference only, given the condition.…

In den Warenkorb10pp., 4to. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An accompanying entry from a French manuscripts catalogue states that the letter was sent to the magazine 'The Age', but not printed. A curious letter, perhaps the product of mental illness, headed 'To the King', and beginning: 'Sire | I address this Letter to your Majesty without feeling any certainty that itt will ever meet your eye, but I think the chances are rather in favour of a public address, than a private Letter.' She is writing 'in behalf of your much injured relative, the Princess Olive of Cumberland', wishing 'to call your recollections, [sic] that there is now in existence a personage, whose wrongs are so deep, & manifold, that the honor of your majesty - of your family - of your Ministers, & of the Nation at large are in her person degraded'. In the course of a long and rambling missive, she suggests that the 'first steps toward justice required by the Princess [.] is payment of your Royal Father's Legacy of £15,000, with the interest due thereon, during a period of thirteen years, [.] unlawfully withheld'. She concludes by stating that she will 'await ten days in the hope of some reply from your Majesty. Should I not have the honor of any recognition to this address - I shall then make an effort to deliver into your own hands an appeal, in which I shall assign such reasons for my portunity that it will be impossible for me to your Majestys displeasure, or the censure of the World for the singularity of such an effort'. Now forgotten, Macauley is an interesting figure. She had some reputation on the Dublin and London stage, appearing at Covent Garden in the rôles of Mary Stuart and Jane Shore, but was dismissed by Kean in 1818 as 'incapable'. See J. S. Bratton, 'Miss Scott and Miss Macauley: "Genius Comes in All Disguises"', Theatre Survey 37.1 (1996), pp. 59-74.…

In den WarenkorbDespite a recent book by Miles Macnair supporting Serre's claims, the case for her imposture is overwhelming, as her entry in the Oxford DNB demonstrates. See also the various reports of the matter (for example Ryves v. Duke of Wellington, Law Times, 31 October 1846). 23pp., foolscap 8vo. On six loose bifoliums of laid paper with 1833 Britannia watermark of Gilling & Alllford. Good, on lightly aged and worn paper. Folded into the customary packet, and docketed on reverse of last leaf 'Copy Letter to the King from the Princess Olive'. (Note that this is not how such a document would have been described had the recipient been a royal representative.) Clearly a draft, with a number of lacunae, and a few emendations in another hand in pencil. The document and its 'signature' do not appear to be in Serres' autograph: they do not resemble other examples consulted, for example the manuscript offered for sale at Sotheby's in London in July 2009. The few pencil annotations are in another hand, and although more like, are still not likely to be in her hand. Written in the year before Serres' death, and apparently unpublished. The first page is headed 'A letter to the Kings Most Excellent Majesty' and begins; 'Sire | The high opinion I wish to Cherish that your Majesty when truth claims your attention will do no wrong induces this public appeal to your justice for the cons[iderati]on and redress of my unprecedented wrongs which I have from Year to yr patiently & degradingly submitted to rather than lay open to the English Nation the true Cause of the desertion and neglect of my late Royal Parents Relatives'. The document ends with the petition (pp.21-23), headed: 'To the Kings Most Excellent Majesty The dutiful and humble petition of Olive Princess of Cumberland - London Feby 1833.' It begins: 'Sheweth | That your Petr altho she is the legitimate Daughter & Sole Heir of his late Royal Highness Henry Frederick, Duke off Cumberland by her Royal Highness Olive his first and lawful Wife is disposed of all her Birthrights except her rank & name of her late Royal Parents'. The petition claims that she 'lawfully proved in the prerogative Court in the month of June 1822' a 'Bequest of his late Majesty Geo[rg]e. the 3rd of £15,000'.…
