From these note he published "Birds of the Atlanta, Georgia, Area", one of the first annotated bird checklists for the state, and was co-author of the first formal checklist for Georgia birds, published in 1945. Er zählt zu den Gründungsfiguren des Menschenrechtsdenkens und des demokratischen Konstitutionalismus. Bisher wurde er jedoch vor allem auf seine Schriften aus der Frühphase der Französischen Revolution reduziert. Nicht selten wurde er auf dieser Grundlage als Vertreter eines einseitig-rationalistischen Politikverständnisses porträtiert, dessen Technizismus mitunter sogar für die terroristische Entgleisung der Französischen Revolution (mit-)verantwortlich gemacht wird. Eine solche verfehlte Sieyès-Rezeption lässt sich nur revidieren, wenn neben den bekannten frühen Schriften auch die des 'späten' Sieyès zur Verfügung stehen.
