"Custance joined the London literary circle around such figures as Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, Ernest Dowson and John Gray in about 1890 when she was only 16. At this time she became infatuated with the poet John Gray and wrote some of her first poetry about him. Heavily influenced by French poets such as Verlaine and Rimbaud and by the decadent mood of that period, she quickly rose to prominence as a poet. In 1901 she became involved in a relationship with the overtly lesbian writer Natalie Clifford Barney in Paris, which Barney later described in her memoirs." - Wikipedia entry on Olive Custance, accessed March 2025.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Small 8vo. viii, 74pp + [ii] publisher's catalogue. Cloth-backed paper-covered boards with a printed paper spine label and a small black-stamped decoration to the tips of all corners. The backstrip cloth and spine label a little darkened and with a single tiny blemish. A trace of toning to the free endpapers, and a contemporary former owner gift inscription inked to the head of the front free endpaper. A very good copy. The author's fourth and final collection, comprising a verse-dedication and thirty-nine poems. Most uncommon. Custance was part of the aesthetic movement of the 1890s, intermingling with the likes of Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley and Ernest Dowson from the age of just sixteen. She engaged in a brief relationship with Natalie Clifford Barney and her then lover Renée Vivien (detailed in the former's memoirs and the latter's novel 'A Woman Appeared to Me') but eventually married Lord Alfred Douglas, their courtship beginning six months after the death of Oscar Wilde. Custance's father disapproved of the relationship, eventually winning custody of their only child, Raymond Douglas. Custance and Douglas endured a stormy relationship, but they remained married (despite "the welter of mud and stones" hurled at it by their enemies - Douglas) until her death in 1944. Douglas himself died the following year.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of an early collection of poetry by Fletcher (1863-1935), perhaps better known for his detective fiction. This copy inscribed by the English poet Olive Custance to the American writer and salonnière Natalie Clifford Barney -'To Natalie ? The Poet and Lover ? from the "Little Princess"'- on the front flyleaf. 'An avid reader of Pre-Raphaelite and aesthetic literature', in the 1890s, Custance (1874-1944) 'developed somewhat flirtatious relationships withJohn Lane,Henry Harland, and Richard Le Gallienne-respectively the publisher, editor, and reader ofThe Yellow Book. Custance was one of the most prolific women poets published in this notorious journal, with poems appearing in eight of its thirteen volumes ?'Custance'sfirst poetry volume,Opals, was published in1897byThe Bodley Head [the same year as Fletcher's] ? The poems addressed toJohn Graywere also included in this volume, along with several other love poems directed at ambiguously gendered beloveds. Such sexual ambiguity was reflected inCustance'slove life during this period. In the winter of1900she received an admiring letter fromNatalie Barney, the openly lesbian author and salon hostess. Custancewas invited byBarneyto Paris, where she also befriended the symbolist poet Renée Vivien (Barney'sformer lover). Accounts of this ménage are contradictory. Barney's autobiography stated thatVivienwas jealous ofCustance; however,Vivien'sletters and herroman-à-clef A Woman Appeared to Me(1904)-in whichCustanceappeared as Dagmar-suggest that she andCustanceenjoyed a brief love affair during the winter of1901'During this period, inJune 1901,Custancewrote a letter of admiration to Lord Alfred Douglas(1870-1945). The poets began to correspond, using the personas of "Fairy Prince" forDouglas, and "Princess" and "Page" forCustance' (Oxford DNB), which may account for the inscription here. Small square 8vo (135 × 104 mm), pp. [6], 42; contemporary green morocco, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, spine lettered gilt; rubbed, some offsetting from the turn-ins.

Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf, using her nickname: 'Jack Scott-Gatty, from Opal Douglas', but misdating it by a decade to Dec. 28th 1901. Custance's fourth and final collection of verse, with, Sarah Parker describes in the ODNB, an 'emphasis on boy-muses such as Hylas and St Sebastian' as well as 'poems addressed Custance's feelings of entrapment, dejection, and her religious beliefs (for example, in "The Prisoner of God")' - seen as deriving from Lord Douglas's conversion to to Catholicism in 1911. Custance, whose early poetry had appeared in 'The Yellow Book', married Lord Alfred Douglas in 1902 - her earlier relationships included a 'brief love affair' with the symbolist poet Renée Vivien (ODNB).
