Between the final years of the Mexican Revolution and the immediate aftermath of WWII, dozens of U.S. painters and photographers flocked to Mexico. Oles reveals the work of these artists, along with representative works of their Mexican contemporaries. The contents include lenders to the Exhibition, Introduction, Constructing a Modern Mexican Art, 1910-1040, South of the Border American Artists in Mexico, 1914-1947, The Artists, Checklist of the Exhibition, Notes, and Photograph Credits. South of the Border: Mexico in the American Imagination, 1914-1947 is a 1993 book edited by James Oles, published by the Smithsonian Institution Press. It explores how US artists and photographers perceived and depicted Mexico between the Mexican Revolution and WWII, featuring 185 images including works by Edward Weston and Paul Strand. It analyzes both high art and commercial "kitsch," exploring the political and cultural context of American fascination with Mexico. It serves as a study of how U.S. painters and photographers depicted Mexico, highlighting works from prominent artists like Marsden Hartley, Helen Levitt, and others. James Oles is a noted scholar of Mexican art, who also authored Art and Architecture in Mexico.
