Some stains from leather at corners/edges of endpapers. Hinges cracked and repaired. Green paper boards with very worn green half-calf; particularly worn along spine. Gilt lettering and ruling on spine, with four raised bands. Leather at bottom corner of rear board lost. Used - Good. Good hardback in half-leather.

Orig. green cloth by Westley & Co., blocked in gilt; sl. marked, spine a little worn at head. Contemp. gift inscription on half title, bookplate of Joan Feisenberger on leading pastedown. Copac lists copies at BL, Oxford and Cambridge only. A lighthearted attempt to explain some of the English language's weirder proverbs, most more or less still in use today ('He that cuts off his nose spites his own face', 'Rome wasn't built in a day'), while others seem to have vanished ('It is not the cowl that makes the monk'), the frontispiece illustration for 'The cat in gloves catches no mice' is especially bizarre.
