The author writes of his boyhood in Kentucky. His claim to fame, as it were, was that he was a cousin of legendary film director David Wark Griffith; in one chapter, the author reminisces about a Sunday dinner held during a visit by Griffith to his relatives in La Grange, at which he witnessed "an unexpected confrontation." (This involves the author's "religious fanatic" grandmother criticizing Griffith's films as "a parade of naked women." Although no date is specified in the book, the details about Griffith's marital status at the time place this event in 1936.) Although the book touts the inclusion of "rare, previously unpublished photos of D.W. Griffith, classic photos by noted Kentucky photographer Kate Matthews, and black and whites from the author's collection," said photos are abysmally reproduced in the text, most having the appearance of multi-generational photocopies -- more than a little ironic, given that the book trades on the author's familial connection with an artist who worked in a visual medium.…
