Format is approximately 26 inches by 17 inches, folded. This map is disbound from Volume I of the Commercial Directory of the American Republics compiled by the Bure…au of American Republics, International Union of American Republics, Joseph P. Smith, Director (1897) [Title page from Directory is present]. Taped to top right of map, in margin, is the statement "This chart is intended solely to show tracks of steam vessels on the ocean, and no authority is assumed for the boundary lines as drawn between the countries." Map has some color differentiation and several inserts presenting distance information between major ports of call. Map has been folded with approximately the top third folded down. It is also folded into four sections of different lengths to fit as the frontis to the Directory. Map has some wear and soiling/staining. This is similar to the large-scale and detailed World chart on Mercator's projection produced by the British Admiralty under the "Superintendence of Captain Wharton, R.N., F.R.S Hydrographer" engraved by Edward Weller and sold by J. D. Potter chart agent. The map has no internal landmass detail unless relevant to steam ship routes, thus, the Suez and Panama canals are marked, as is the Canadian Pacific Railway. Panels along the lower edge list major ports and give distances dependent on routes taken, and average knots-per-hour speeds with daily distances covered in miles. The world's major ports are linked by ship-routes, each track with its relevant distance and so on. An interesting chart at the time steam took over from sail. Charles Dwight Sigsbee (1845 - 1923) was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. In his earlier career he was a pioneering oceanographer and hydrographer. He is best remembered as the captain of the USS Maine, which exploded in Havana harbor, Cuba, in 1898. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

The main map, natural scale 1/30,000, shows Jeddah's position along the coast, which is co…vered from Ruba t'Ashara in the north to the "low featureless" country south of Jezirat Ghorab to the south, and the complexities of the approach to it by sea. Both this and the large Inner Anchorage inset map, 1/12,500, show the town of Jeddah itself as it would have appeared at the start of Ibn Saud's reign, with a remarkable degree of detail. This includes the old city wall with its gates marked, among which the Medina, Mecca and Cherif Gates are named on the landward sides, and the Main and Small Gates on the coastal side. Major buildings labelled include several Consulates (Persian, Egyptian, British, French, Russian, Austrian, Dutch); the Governor's House; Customs House; Landing; Quarantine; Barracks; Police Station; Post Office; Telephone Office; Prison; and the Minarets of various mosques (Senussi, Mahmud, Hanafe, and Pacha). Also labelled is Holt's Agency (Alfred Holt & Co, aka Blue Funnel or Ocean Steam Ship), which ran a lucrative business transporting Malay and Indonesian pilgrims. Outside of the city walls north of the Medina Gate are Eve's Tomb or Ummina Hawwa with a small diagram showing its configuration, the tomb of Marabout Sheikh Fadah, a cemetery, and the old Ottoman barracks (Kishla). Outside the walls to the south are the tomb of Marabout Shiekh Bulyon, a Government mill, and the Christian burial ground.

This is a March 1938 U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office aeronautic map of the North Pacific detailing prevailing winds. Wind roses indicate what the wind at the surface averaged over 100 hours. Boxes on the left… and right sides provide average wind readings at 2,500 feet, 5,000 feet, and 10,000 feet above major cities of the Pacific Rim, including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Manila, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Red lines trace air routes, including the famed China Clipper route from San Francisco to Hong Kong via Honolulu, Midway, Wake, Guam, and Manila. An inset in the upper left presents isobars and isotherms for March 1938 and an inset in the upper right details gales for the month of March. Explanatory information occupies most of the upper right. Verso Content A narrative of the March 1937 trailblazing Pan American flight from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand occupies the verso. This narrative details the flight, its waypoints, and the establishment of a Transpacific aviation route to Australasia, a landmark achievement in civilian aviation. Publication History and Census The U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office published Chart No. 1401 as early as 1895 on a monthly basis. Chart No. 1401a began being published on a monthly basis in January 1929. Right side trimmed past border. Size 32.75 x 49 Inches. This is a 1939 U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office chart of the Aleutian Islands and the North Pacific, with WWII Era… manuscript annotations. Coverage extends from Siberia, Sakhalin, and northern Japan to Bristol Bay and southwestern Alaska. War Games Colored blue and orange and written in blue ink, these notations likely reference a war game undertaken by cadets at the U.S. Naval War College in 1940 or 1941. Our research indicates that cadets in both classes participated in war games in the Aleutian Islands early in the academic year. The War Game Unfortunately we have been unable to directly link this piece to any specific exercise. Its use of blue and orange strongly suggests that it was part of a training exercise, because 'Orange' was the code name set aside for Japan in the U.S. Navy from just after World War I and 'Blue' was meant to denote American forces. Using this logic as a baseline, this likely means that the 'Orange Northern Raiding Force' identified in Kuluk Bay, Adak Island, was the Japanese force attacking the Aleutian Islands in this iteration of the Aleutian Islands war game. The American base at Dutch Harbor (the only base in the Aleutians until the Japanese occupied Attu and Kiska in June 1942) and Dolgoi Harbor were most likely meant to be the targets. Now, from here the specifics of the war game become more unclear. Four rendezvous points are colored orange and progress northwest through the Pacific. Since they are colored orange, the rendezvous points were likely meant for the Orange force, but it is unclear if they progress from 'A' to 'E' away from the Aleutians, or from 'E' to 'A' toward the Aleutians. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in August 1939 and bears manuscript notations written by an unknown hand that likely reference a U.S. Naval War College war game from 1940 or 1941. This is the only known cataloged example of this chart and the additional manuscript notations make it a truly rare find.

This is a rare large-format 1890 nautical chart of the Atlantic Coast of the United States prepared by the U.S. Hydrographic Office. Among other interesting features, the chart has a very clear provenance, having been purc…hased by Captain Thomas R. Anderson for use aboard the ship Albania . A Closer Look The map covers from Buzzards Bay and Martha's Vineyard at top to the Outer Banks and Cape Lookout in the south. Soundings are provided all along the coast, out to a distance of several hundred miles in some places. The locations of lighthouses are marked with red dots within yellow circles (several of these, such as those at Cape Hatteras and Currituck Beach, had been badly damaged in the U.S. Civil War and were only rebuilt in the 1870s). Additional navigational information on shoals, bottoms, magnetic compass variations, buoys, and hazards is also included. Supplementary tables on symbols for different types of buoys, bottoms, a complete list of coastal lighthouses with their range and other characteristics, and weather signals are provided in marginal areas, as are two large compass roses. Provenance - the Albania The chart contains faint pencil annotations within and to the northeast of the top compass rose, strongly suggesting use aboard a ship. Indeed, a note on the linen backing of the chart mentions that it was one of three purchased in 1891 by Thomas Reese Anderson, the Canadian captain of the ship Albania (built 1884 and registered in Saint John, New Brunswick), for use in this case for the approaches to New York Harbor. Newspaper records of the era indicate that the Albania was used for trans-Pacific cargo shipments in the mid-late 1880s and early 1890s, primarily between Yokohama or Hyogo (Kobe) and New York, though it also stopped at other ports such as Calcutta and Java (Jakarta). Initially under the command of one Yates, Mr. Anderson became captain in 1891, the same year the chart was purchased. As a sail ship rather than a steamer, the Albania had become somewhat outdated by the mid-1890s, though its use into that decade is a reminder that steam power did not immediately displace sail power once it became available. Publication History and Census This chart was drawn by Jean Baptiste Leon Dessez and engraved by Henry C. Evans for the U.S. Hydrographic Office, compiling information from the U.S. Coast Survey. Initially prepared in 1884 and published in 1885, this example updates navigational information to 1890. A fascinating working nautical chart, this is an 1888 U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office map of the Rio de la Plata, South America. The map features manuscript annotations following several vo…yages detailing lights and hazards. It offers unique insight into the navigation of one of the world's most famous estuaries. A Closer Look Depicting from the mouth of the Paraná River east to Palmar Point and the Atlantic Ocean, impressive navigational detail appears throughout. Hazards, such as banks and flats, are illustrated. The chart also highlights gaps in its information: for example, some of the banks - such as Ortiz Bank - are labeled as 'imperfectly known'. The manuscript notation shows evidence of navigators' efforts to incorporate new knowledge to improve the chart, such as Cuirassier Bank and the navigational lights evident around the hazard. Pencil arcs and circles define where certain navigational lights (both coastal lights and those attached to buoys or ships) can be seen. Three navigational tracks are traced in pencil. All converge on the Point India Light Ship just below Cuirassier Bank and then proceed towards Buenos Aires. Coastal points, rivers and river mouths, lagoons, mountains, and other features are illustrated, but as is typical with nautical charts, very little inland detail is present. Apart from Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Maldonado are labeled. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Harrison Brewer, engraved by Stephen Kubel and John Waddey, and published with updates by the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in June 1888. The first edition was published by the Hydrographic Office in 1886. This piece is not cataloged in OCLC, and we note only a handful of instances when it has appeared on the private market. With its abundance of manuscript navigational notations, this chart is a unique one-of-a-kind find.
