Provenance: Medical Library of Jan E. Muhlbauer. ---- FIRST EDITION, AND OF UTMOST RARITY, of this field manual. The first part about the treatment of burns ("heisser und kalter Brandt") was already published in Latin in 1603 under the title "De combustionibus, quae oleo et aqua fervida" by the same printer Ludwig König. "Fabry's book includes an early description of a field drug chest for army use. He was one of the most eminent surgeons of his time, although not prepared to adopt all the teachings of Paré. He had considerable mechanical ingenuity and devised many pieces of apparatus" (Garrison-Morton-Norman). The work was translated to English in 1674. The first edition is even rarer than the second of 1615 with no copy at auction recorded in RHB. Fabry was a leading German surgeon of his time, which is why he is now referred to as the "father of German surgery." During his lifetime, he called for comprehensive training in botany, chemistry, and anatomy and was considered a doctor with a strong sense of humanity. He criticized torture as pointless to politicians. Fabry wrote around 20 medical works, including Observationum et Curationum Chirurgicarum Centuriae (1606-1641), a collection of over 600 case reports that appeared in installments of 100 during his lifetime and were published posthumously in 1641. Three extensive manuscripts in the Burgerbibliothek Bern, containing around 450 letter transcripts, some with illustrations, bear witness to the preliminary work. These include the description of the removal of a mayor's eye destroyed by a malignant melanoma and the report on the magnetic extraction of metallic foreign bodies from the eye, invented by his wife Marie Colinet in 1624. In his work De Gangraena Et Sphacelo, published in 1593, he proposed the amputation of limbs above the injury. He devoted himself to the classification of burns in his work De Combustionibus, published in 1607 (Wikisource). Bibliography: Garrison-Morton-Norman 2142, Krivatsy/NLM 3857, Waller 2903 (all for the 1615 second edition only); not in Wellcome. - Visit our website to see more images!
