First edition. 12mo, Whitaker was the President of the Union Christian College, in Merom, Indiana. His first book, HERBERT BROWN (1905) went through 7 editions quickly. "Dick Haley" was the son of a miner who was killed in a saloon fight. This novel tells of the difficulties which ensued in his life. Dick's school days ended at the age of nine. Told with some Indiana dialect. "On that day when [the teacher] refused the flowers his innocent hands had gathered - on that day Dick Haley's teacher robbed her state of a true and useful citizen, and gave it, instead, a murderer." Plus 1p. advertisement for OVERMAN--WHITAKER DEBATE. Illustrated with six black and white captioned photos. Black pebble-grained cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and with a black and white photo onlay of Herbert Brown set within a white cartouche on the front cover. Minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, cloth very lightly soiled, photo onlay slightly rubbed, white cartouche intact and bright, front hinge starting, gilt bright, else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. No dust jacket. According to OCLC, this is a work of fiction. The advertisement at the rear of the volume announces the "Overman-Whitaker Debate On the Question: Does the 'Church of Christ' (Disciple) Offer a Practical and Scriptural Basis for the Union of Christians?" The ad further declares, "This debate was held in the Opera House at Lincoln, Kan., Jan. 8-11, 1906, and was reported by Wm. M. Day, Stenographer, of Topeka, Kan.
