Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First impression of the first US edition, published as a paperback original in 2000 in the John F. Byrne Irish Literature series. The book was originally published in hardback in the UK by Hart-Davis, MacGibbon in 1973. With a new Preface by Kevin O'Nolan, who also edited the collection. ***Near fine in glossy card covers. Covers slightly creased. Slight abrasion to the fore-edge of the page block. Edges just very slightly creased. No reading creases to the spine. Internally near fine, with no annotations or inscriptions, and no tears. Pages clean and white. ***204mm x134mm. 189 pages. ***Contents: Preface, The First Article, Monologues and Dialogues, The District and Other Courts, Bores, Latin Corner, Requiem Writings, Criticism, Politics, Controversy, Debate, Two Stories. ***'Flann O'Brien adopted the name "Myles na Gopaleen" for the hilarious Cruiskeen Lawn column which he wrote for the Irish Times from 1940-1966. Whereas "The Best of Myles" covered the first five years of the column's life, this companion edition covers the period from 1947-1957. Here can be found the true transcripts of Myles's clashes with the law courts on charges of larceny, currency offenses, marrying without the consent of his parents, gang warfare, and using bad language; here too are bizarre obituaries, bores, banalities, jovialities and immoralities, and the return of the preposterous Brother. Also included is the first-ever Myles article.' (Quote taken from the back cover). ***A first impression of the first US edition, published as a paperback original, in nice collectable condition. This American edition is uncommon in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing. Publisher's original red and black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Sean O'Sullivan illustrated dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with some bumping to the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with an ink inscription to the front free endpaper and a couple of isolated spots to the top edge of the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed, toned and creased, price-clipped dustwrapper, that is otherwise remains without loss or tears. The author's third novel to be published within his lifetime, and his fourth novel overall. A satire set in turn-of-the-century Dublin, a critique of the Roman Catholic Church (despite the author's Catholic background), squalid living conditions in Ireland, and the development of Irish identity. In his letters to editor Timothy O'Keeffe, O'Brien confidently expressed that the unflattering portrayals of Catholic figures would lead to the book's censorship and that he expected to face several legal challenges, yet ultimately none were put to him. The novel was immediately successful, selling out in Dublin in just 48 hours, and drew comparison to James Joyce's 'Dubliners', 1914 and 'A Portrait of the Artist'. (Clissmann, Anne: Flann O'Brien: A Critical Introduction to His Writings, 1975, Gill and Macmillan, pp. 269-71). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Hardcover in bright yellow paper covered boards lettered in black over black cloth spine lettered in yellow. States only "First published 1939" on copyright page but this, the first American edition, was actually published in 1951 by Pantheon. 316 pp. A tight, bright example with a touch of soiling about the edges of the text block. In the original dust jacket, yellow printed in black, price of $3.00 intact. Jacket is evenly but materially soiled, very small chip lower front edge and very shallow wear along the top edge. The Irish author's first novel, it was published in London in 1939 (the true first is virtually unobtainable) and has been considered one of the top 20th century novels. Graham Green called it "A book in a thousand." and likened it to "Tristam Shandy" and "Ulysses". It is a sophisticated novel of a young Dublin literature student, told in the first person but with deals with three seperate, interwoven stories. The book's unusual tile is derived from the name of a ford on the River Shannon in Ireland.…

Brian O'Nolan (1911-1966) was an Irish novelist, playwright and satirist, considered a major figure in twentieth century Irish literature. His English language novels, such as At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman, were written under the pen name Flann O'Brien. His many satirical columns in The Irish Times and an Irish language novel An Béal Bocht were written under the name Myles na gCopaleen. At Swim-Two-Birds is widely considered to be O'Brien's masterpiece, and one of the most sophisticated examples of metafiction. It was originally published in 1939 by Longmns, but only sold around 240 copies before 1940, when Longman's London premises were destroyed during a bombing raid by the Luftwaffe and almost all the unsold copies were incinerated. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Magazine. 12 issues. Large quartos. Vol. 1, Nos. 1-12 (April 12 - June 28, 1952). Each stapled issue consists of eight pages. A continuous run of the first 12 issues (of only 13 issues published), lacking the final issue (No. 13, July 5, 1952). A few small edge tears, the first two issues are toned with scattered foxing in issue No. 1 and a bump and associated chip and tear at upper left corner of issue No. 2, issue No. 12 is lightly toned at bottom margin with some chipping and small tears at the bottom edge, very good overall. Housed in a fine dark green clamshell box together with a near fine copy of the uncommon 1981 complete facsimile edition of all 13 issues (published by the Goldsmith Press, Ltd., with an introduction by Peter Kavanagh). A near complete set of this short-lived "unique and extraordinary magazine," edited and published in Dublin by the great Irish poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh and his brother Peter Kavanagh. As noted by Gerry Smyth in *The Paris Review*, the magazine "was intended to shock contemporary Ireland from what its editors considered to be the dreadful moral, economic, and artistic malaise into which it had collapsed." Patrick and Peter wrote much of the content, with Patrick contributing most of the leading articles and some poems, published under his name and various pseudonyms. Peter financed and designed the magazine, and contributed articles under the pseudonym John L. Flanagan. Novelist, playwright, and satirist Brian O'Nolan (better known as Flann O'Brien, a key figure in 20th Century Irish literature), contributed six articles between April and June, most under the pseudonym Myles na gCopaleen. Patrick once remarked that the magazine contained his "best autobiograph." After *Kavanagh's Weekly* folded, the brothers burned all the unsold copies in the fireplace of their Dublin flat. A scarce set of the first 12 issues, together with the complete edition in facsimile, well-preserved in a fine clamshell box. References: Peter J. McDonnell, "An Irishman's Diary," *The Irish Times*, June 16, 2012. Gerry Smyth, "O'Brien & Kavanagh: Kicking Against the Pricks," *The Parish Review* (Spring 2014).…
