A satire set in turn-of-the-century Dublin, a critique of the Roman Catholic Church (despite the author's Catholic background), squalid living conditions in Ireland, and the development of Irish identity. In his letters to editor Timothy O'Keeffe, O'Brien confidently expressed that the unflattering portrayals of Catholic figures would lead to the book's censorship and that he expected to face several legal challenges, yet ultimately none were put to him. The novel was immediately successful, selling out in Dublin in just 48 hours, and drew comparison to James Joyce's 'Dubliners', 1914 and 'A Portrait of the Artist'. States only "First published 1939" on copyright page but this, the first American edition, was actually published in 1951 by Pantheon. 316 pp. A tight, bright example with a touch of soiling about the edges of the text block. In the original dust jacket, yellow printed in black, price of $3.00 intact. Jacket is evenly but materially soiled, very small chip lower front edge and very shallow wear along the top edge. The Irish author's first novel, it was published in London in 1939 (the true first is virtually unobtainable) and has been considered one of the top 20th century novels. Graham Green called it "A book in a thousand." and likened it to "Tristam Shandy" and "Ulysses". It is a sophisticated novel of a young Dublin literature student, told in the first person but with deals with three seperate, interwoven stories. A continuous run of the first 12 issues (of only 13 issues published), lacking the final issue (No. 13, July 5, 1952). A few small edge tears, the first two issues are toned with scattered foxing in issue No. 1 and a bump and associated chip and tear at upper left corner of issue No. 2, issue No. 12 is lightly toned at bottom margin with some chipping and small tears at the bottom edge, very good overall. Housed in a fine dark green clamshell box together with a near fine copy of the uncommon 1981 complete facsimile edition of all 13 issues (published by the Goldsmith Press, Ltd., with an introduction by Peter Kavanagh). A near complete set of this short-lived "unique and extraordinary magazine," edited and published in Dublin by the great Irish poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh and his brother Peter Kavanagh. As noted by Gerry Smyth in *The Paris Review*, the magazine "was intended to shock contemporary Ireland from what its editors considered to be the dreadful moral, economic, and artistic malaise into which it had collapsed." Patrick and Peter wrote much of the content, with Patrick contributing most of the leading articles and some poems, published under his name and various pseudonyms. Peter financed and designed the magazine, and contributed articles under the pseudonym John L. Flanagan. Novelist, playwright, and satirist Brian O'Nolan (better known as Flann O'Brien, a key figure in 20th Century Irish literature), contributed six articles between April and June, most under the pseudonym Myles na gCopaleen. Patrick once remarked that the magazine contained his "best autobiograph." After *Kavanagh's Weekly* folded, the brothers burned all the unsold copies in the fireplace of their Dublin flat.
