O Neill later suppressed the play, reportedly at the urging of his wife Carlotta, believing it was too personal and too revealing to be released during his lifetime, and he instructed that it not be published or performed. The manuscript remained effectively sealed for decades and was only released posthumously in 2002, when it appeared for the first time in print, accompanied by a foreword by Edward Albee, who emphasizes its importance as a key document in understanding O Neill s emotional life and the origins of his mature dramatic voice.
