Only seven of Sophocles' tragedies are extant. The text in Greek with substantial notes in Latin. These seven volumes are the edition of Carl Gottlob August Erfurdt (1780-1813), a famous German classical philologist, completed and with notes by Johann Gottfried Jakob Hermann (1772-1848). The seven volumes for sale are uniformly bound in contemporary or slightly later full leather boards with gold titling on leather labels and five thin raised bands on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some expected scuffing to the leather on the boards and spines. There is a small bit of loss to the leather on the top corners of volume 1 and the top of the spine of volumes 1 and 7. There is a thin split to the leather down the front spine edge and top 1" of the rear spine edge of volume 1; the bottom 4 1/2" of the front spine edge of volume 3; top 1" of the rear spine edge of volume 4; the front spine edge of volume 5; top 2" of the rear spine edge on volume 6; and top 3" of the front spine edge on volume 7. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and light to moderate foxing on the endpapers, title pages and last few pages in each volume. All seven volumes have a bookplate and a small private library reference number sticked on the front fixed endpapers. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy and valuable set and so extra postage may be required.
