VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: The Practical Radio Reference Book Summary: The Practical Radio Reference Book (edited by Roy C. Norris, first published around the late 1940s) is a compact technical handbook intended for radio technicians, students, and amateur radio enthusiasts. Rather than teaching radio theory step by step, it serves as a quick-reference manual collecting practical information, formulas, diagrams, tables, and design data in one place. Key areas covered include: • Radio theory fundamentals - AC theory, algebra for radio calculations, and electrical principles. • Valve (vacuum tube) technology - tube types, terminology, operating principles, and circuit formulas. • Circuit design and components - resistors, capacitors, coils, transformers, and component selection/design tables. • Measurement instruments - practical use of test equipment and interpreting oscilloscope patterns. • Sound amplification - microphones, loudspeakers, amplifier characteristics, and audio principles. • Interference suppression - reducing electrical noise and radio interference. • Short-wave and television topics - aimed at radio hobbyists and service engineers. • Reference aids - charts, abacs (calculation aids), diagrams, and lookup tables for everyday engineering work.
