Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Thus. London: John Lane - The Bodley Head Ltd., 1929. First thus. The book begins as the story of a handsome footman who resists the come-ons of a wealthy woman - intended to parody a popular eighteenth century novel about hand-maid in the same fix - and then takes on a life of its own, describing the further adventures of this footman and the persons he meets along the way. The twelve full-page Tealby illustrations (plus additional ones within the text) are quite expressive of the humor of the book. Black cloth printed in gilt, pictorial endpapers, 350 pages. Some light external wear, mainly a bit of fraying to the spine ends, good hinges, very clean pages. Five of the plates have dampstains at the far top inner margins, with only one having the stain actually touch the printed image (the stains must have occurred prior to binding, as none of the text pages have similar stains). Very clean pages, with no foxing other than a light scattering on the first blank and half-title. Name on first blank. A sound, clean and handsome copy. First Thus. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Verso has copyright date of 1927, title page has date of 1928 printed at botom of page. Frontis color illustration tipped in. xiv, [2], 129, [1] pages. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Somewhat shaken. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza (10 March 1833 - 19 July 1891) was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, author of the novel El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat, 1874). The story is an adaptation of a popular tradition and provides a lively picture of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897) and Manuel deFalla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919). Alarcón wrote another popular short novel, El capitan Venero ('Captain Poison', 1881). He produced four other full-length novels. One of these novels, El escandalo ('The Scandal', 1875), became noted for its keen psychological insights. Alarcón also wrote three travel books and many short stories and essays. Alarcón was born in Guadix, near Granda. In 1859, he served in a Spanish military operation in Morocco. He gained his first literary recognition with A Witnerss' Diary of the African War (1859-1860), a patriotic account of the campaign. One of the best-loved Spanish novels of all time, "The Three-Cornered Hat" is a hilarious tale of lust, intrigue, and corruption set in 18th-century Andalusia. When the hideous and lascivious corregidor Don Eugenio takes a fancy to the formidable--and formidably desirable--Senora Frasquita, the wife of the local miller, the couple sets about foiling his plans for a seduction. There ensues a fast-paced comedy of moonlight flits, clothes swapping, mistaken identity, and slapstick mishaps as the characters struggle in vain to maintain both dignity and marital harmony. Calm is eventually restored in a scene of unmasking and mutual forgiveness of truly operatic proportions. Pedro Alarcon is one of Spain's most prominent writers. He is chiefly remembered for his subtly ironic plots and quintessentially Spanish settings and characterizations. Norman Tealby (illustrator).…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Henry Fielding' provides a detailed examination of the life, career, and enduring influence of one of the 18th century's most significant literary figures. As a pioneer of the English novel, Fielding's contributions to literature and social reform remain a vital subject for students of history and letters alike. This work explores his transition from a satirical playwright to a masterful novelist, highlighting the wit and moral complexity that define his most famous writings, including 'The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling' and 'Joseph Andrews'.The narrative captures the spirit of the Georgian era, detailing Fielding's experiences as a magistrate and his efforts to bring order to the streets of London. By analyzing his literary techniques and the societal pressures that informed his prose, the text sheds light on the development of the 'comic epic-poem in prose.' This study is an invaluable guide for those seeking to understand the evolution of storytelling and the life of a man who transformed the landscape of British fiction. It stands as a testament to Fielding's sharp intellect and his lasting impact on the western canon. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good Indeed. An illustrated edition of Henry Fielding's first full-length novel comic novel. Published in 1742 and defined by Fielding as a "comic epic poem in prose", it is the story of a good-natured footman's adventures on the road home from London with his friend and mentor, the absent-minded parson Abraham Adams. The novel represents the coming together of the two competing aesthetics of eighteenth-century literature: the mock-heroic and neoclassical (and, by extension, aristocratic) approach of Augustans such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift; and the popular, domestic prose fiction of novelists such as Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson. The novel draws on a variety of inspirations. Written "in imitation of the manner of Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote", the work owes much of its humour to the techniques developed by Cervantes, and its subject-matter to the seemingly loose arrangement of events, digressions and lower-class characters to the genre of writing known as picaresque. In deference to the literary tastes and recurring tropes of the period, it relies on bawdy humour, an impending marriage and a mystery surrounding unknown parentage, but conversely is rich in philosophical digressions, classical erudition and social purpose. With numerous plates and illustrations by Norman Tealby throughout. In a decorative cloth binding with Brodart dustwrapper. Externally smart. Some minor shelfwear to the boards. Dustwrapper is smart, with some minor edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with some scattered light spotting, particularly to first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. Norman Tealby (illustrator). book.…
