The Sylvia, commanded by Commander St John of the Royal Navy, surveyed the entire Hokkaido region in 1871. Accompanying him was Captain Swinton Holland (1843-1922), an amateur photographer, who photographed various locations with the assistance of Gennosuke Noguchi as interpreter and assistant.
