The Sylvia, commanded by Commander St John of the Royal Navy, surveyed the entire Hokkaido region in 1871. Accompanying him was Captain Swinton Holland (1843-1922), an amateur photographer, who…photographed various locations with the assistance of Gennosuke Noguchi as interpreter and assistant. These are considered the earliest photographs of the Ainu taken within their settlements.
