Hardcover. Noggle, Anne (illustrator). Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. xi, [1], 160, [4] p. Illustrated. Occasional footnotes. Introduction by Dora Doubherty Strother. From the amazon website review by R. Chapulina: "Author Anne Noggle is a veteran of the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASP), organized during World War ll to free male aviators from non-combat duties. American women flew every type of fighter and bomber, from the nimble P-38 Lightning to the massive B-17 "Flying Fortress". They ferried warplanes from factory to front, and helped train young men in flying and targeting. And in September 1944, WASP Anne Baumgartner test-piloted the American prototype jet-fighter, the YP-59A Airacomet. This big, glossy book contains a brief history of the WASP and narrative of their training, accompanied by large, high-quality black-and-white photos of the youthful aviators and their airplanes. Their pride of service is evident in their smiling faces and the praise from military leaders such as Generals Arnold and Eisenhower. Their bittersweet sorrow at their post-war deactivation is described poignantly. They continue to meet annually, and the book concludes with a series of more recent photos of the women, as they appeared in the early 90's. Members of the WASP have attended as guest of honor at the yearly reunions of Russian female WWll combat-aviators." This is Number One of The Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Texas Photography Series. From Wikipedia: "Anne Noggle (1922-August 16, 2005) was an American aviator. She served as a WASP during World War II and made a career for herself as a photographer after the war. Noggle was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1922, and died Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 16, 2005 at the age of 83. She set a goal of becoming a pilot after seeing Amelia Earhart at an air show in Chicago. When she was 17, her mother, who was a bookstore manager, agreed to let her take flying lessons. At 21, Noggle traveled to Sweetwater, Texas, to attend training to become one of the Women Airforce Service Pilots(WASP). She graduated in the class of 44-W-1. She flew missions in 1943 and 1944. The WASP were disbanded in late 1944. After the war, she became a crop-duster in the Southwest and flew stunts in an aerial circus. When the Air Force offered commissions to former WASPs in 1953, she applied and was a pilot during the Korean War. She retired as a captain in 1959 when she developed emphysema. While in the Air Force, Noggle had been stationed in Paris. She visited the Louvre which ignited an artistic impulse. Back in the States, she enrolled at the University of New Mexico as an art history major. She earned a bachelor's degree in fine art in 1966 and a master's in 1969. Noggle went back to school and in 1969 graduated with a Masters in Art from the University of New Mexico. She developed her skills as a photographer and developed an interest in documenting the aging process of women including her own witty and challenging self-portraits. Noggle was Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art from 1970-76. Noggle accepted a position of adjunct professor of Art at the University of New Mexico and taught there from 1970 to 1984. The Harn Museum at the University of Florida presented an exhibition of Noggle's photographs from June 26, 2012 to March 10, 2013. The title of the exhibition was "Anne Noggle: Reality and the Blind Eye of Truth." [8] Noggle's work is in the permanent collections of several art museums, including California Museum of Photography, Denver Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, New Mexico Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1975 Noggle co-curated an exhibition and catalog for the San Francisco Museum of Art, Women of Photography: An Historical Survey. This exhibition was credited with introducing the work of American women photographers to a broader audience. She made portraits of her fellow WASPs as older women in the book For God, Country and the Thrill of It: Women Airforce Service Pilots in Wor.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. Noggle, Anne (illustrator). Sewn binding. Paper over boards. xiv, 318, [4]. Pages. Illustrations of Airwomen Maps. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Introduction by Christine A. White. Anne Noggle (1922 August 16, 2005) was an American aviator. She served as a WASP during World War II and later made a career for herself as a photographer. Noggle was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1922, and died in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 16, 2005 at the age of 83. She set a goal of becoming a pilot after seeing Amelia Earhart at an air show in Chicago. At 21, Noggle traveled to Sweetwater, Texas, to train to become one of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). She graduated in the class of 44-W-1. She flew missions in 1943 and 1944. After the war, she became a crop-duster in the Southwest and flew stunts in an aerial circus. When the Air Force offered commissions to former WASPs in 1953, she applied and was a pilot during the Korean War. She developed her skills as a photographer and developed an interest in documenting the aging process of women including her own witty and challenging self-portraits. "Night Witches" is the English translation of Nachthexen, a World War II German nickname for the women military aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, of the Soviet Air Forces. Though women were initially barred from combat, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin issued an order on October 8, 1941 to deploy three women's air force units, including the 588th regiment. The regiment, formed by Colonel Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokia Bershanskaya, was made up entirely of women volunteers in their late teens and early twenties. The regiment flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions against the German military from 1942 until the end of the war. At its largest, it had 40 two-person crews. The regiment flew over 24,000 missions and dropped 23,000 tons of bombs. It was the most highly decorated all-women unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot having flown over 800 missions by the end of the war and twenty-three having been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Thirty of its members died in combat. The regiment flew in wood-and-canvas Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes, a 1928 design intended for use as training aircraft and for crop dusting, and to this day the most-produced biplane in aviation history. The planes could carry only six bombs at a time, so 8 or more missions per night were often necessary. Although the aircraft were obsolete and slow, the pilots made daring use of their exceptional maneuverability; they had the advantage of having a maximum speed that was lower than the stall speed of both the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and as a result, German pilots found them very difficult to shoot down. An attack technique of the night bombers was to idle the engine near the target and glide to the bomb release point, with only wind noise left to reveal their location. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and named the pilots "Night Witches. Due to the weight of the bombs and the low altitude of flight, the pilots carried no parachutes. From June 1942, the 588th Night Bomber Regiment was within the 4th Air Army. In February 1943, the regiment was honored with a reorganization into the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment and in October 1943 it became the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment. "Taman" referred to the unit's involvement in two celebrated Soviet victories on the Taman Peninsula during 1943. First edition. First printing [stated]. Presumed first printing.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good +. First edition. SIGNED. Small square quarto [25cm x25cm]. Black cloth over boards, with title stamped in silver on spine. Spine ends a touch rubbed. Mild toning to edges of textblock. In a dust jacket with spots of soiling and rubbing. Laid in Anne Noggle "In Memoriam" clipping. Signed by the author in black ink on the title page. As an adolescent, Anne Noggle definitively decided to pursue aviation after seeing Amelia Earhart at a Chicago air show. She became a Woman Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), fighting in the last years of WWII. After developing breathing issues, she retired as a pilot in 1959. Noggle went back to school; she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in fine art from the University of New Mexico, graduating in her late 40s. Her interest was photography, and her primary focus was documenting the aging process in women. She referred to this subject as, "the saga of the fallen flesh." She did not shy away from self-portraits, notably taking close up shots of herself while healing from a face lift. "Silver Lining" was the first published book of her collected photography, and it is a powerful look at the unique yet universal experience of female aging.

Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. An original, unframed gelatin silver print, "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," titled, dated 1983 and signed by Noggle in pencil on verso. Image size 12-7/8 x 18-3/4 inches; paper size 16 x 20 inches. Fine. No visible flaws. As Noggle's friend, Yolanda Belloli appeared frequently in the artist's work, and numerous images of her appear in Noggle's 1983 book Silver Lining. The Latin title of this image--which roughly translates as, "So glory fades a bit"--underscores Noggle's unblinking interest in aging. From the artist: "I photograph people, most often older women, focusing on the tension between the iron determinant of age and the individual character of the subject. I try for images that go beneath the surface into that unchanging arena of the human psyche, formed in early life, which grows into maturity but does not relinquish its basic character throughout one's life. That deepest self, discernible only to one who is patient, watchful, and perhaps older oneself. The image I seek is of youth betrayed by age, of spirit strong but fragile with time. I want to show who the people in my pictures are, and how damned difficult it is as each of us in our time becomes them." Signed by Author.
