The main treasure of the Foundling Hospital consists of a group of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts of the middle years of the eighteenth century which has survived intact at 40 Brunswick Square. It is more or less unique in London as a key to artistic taste in England around 1750 and includes several outstanding works of art by Hogarth, Ramsay, Roubiliac and other leading artists of the period. The Hospital Minute Books, preserved in Brunswick Square from 1739 onwards, contained a mass of unpublished material relating to the treasures of the hospital, which is incorporated in this book.
