In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. First Edition Thus. Wraps. 1st thus. Quarto. 8 by 10 inches. 60pp. Sumptous full limp vellum covers lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. Green silk ties. One of 50 copies, this unnumbered, printed on mould made paper imported from France 'Velin D'Arches.' Signed by H. Montgomery Hyde and Tim DÕArch Smith. Facsimile of 1890s Uranian periodical which lasted one issue only and was, at the time, limited to 100 copies. Introduction by H. Montgomery Hyde and essay by Tim DÕArch Smith in 8pp pamphlet (very faintly used) Contents included a series of epigrams by Wilde entitled "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young" 2 poems by Lord Alfred Douglas, a poem by Gambril Nicholson and "The Priest and the Acolyte," published anonymously, but actually by the magazine's editor John Francis Bloxam--a palpably gay story of a priest and an altar boy that lead to the suppression and condemnation of the original magazine. Loosely inserted is a good signed letter from Dr Krishnamurti and another signed letter from Nat Gould (1890s Society) to Reuben Heffer with an invitation for him to the launch of the book. Also a prospectus for the book and a cutting one showing Mr Heffer at a celebratory party for the book in his bookshop. About fine. Signedes.

The author's first published collection of poems, an elusive collection of Uranian verse extolling the virtues of boys. The Petrachan sonnets chronicle the love for a boy over an extended period of time and are among the best of Uranian poetry. The second issue of the first edition, the first having been the subject of fulminations by Frederick Rolfe for the use of one of his own poems (St. William of Norwich on p. 164) and withdrawn after publication. A very good copy in half-parchment and floral fabric, boards lightly worn, spine and endpapers a bit darkened and slightly marked, a few small stains to cover, hinges a bit weak. Warmly inscribed by the author to F.H. Whitehouse "in memory of days at Rydal Mount from his affectionate friend/July 29, 1892." The recipient was perhaps one of Nicholson's young football-playing protégés. Quite rare. Second state, lacking pp. 163-164 (i.e. the poems 'The Boyhood of Raleigh' and 'St. William of Norwich'), some toning to endpapers, top edge gilt, original Japanese vellum-backed patterned boards, spine toned and rubbed at ends, small splits at head of joints, edges a little rubbed, snall crease on front cover.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, one of 37 large paper copies signed by the author on the limitation page, this number 12 of 12 kept aside for presentation. A further 200 trade copies were also issued. Nicholson (1866-1931), a member of the Uranian school of poets and of the Order of Chaeronea, was an English schoolteacher who wrote in his poetry of his passionate attachments to several students. He was a student of Frederick Rolfe, known as "Baron Corvo", at King Edward VI Grammar School, and the two continued a tempestuous friendship until their falling out in 1887. Duodecimo. Photographic frontispiece. Original blue paper covered boards, spine and front cover labels printed in black, edges untrimmed, entirely unopened. Spine toned, creasing to ends, faint offsetting to endpapers, contents clean: a near-fine copy.
