An extracted and complete section salvaged from a defective first edition of Culpeperâs Last Legacy (1655). The text block is sound and highly legible. Pages exhibit uniform age-toning typical of mid-17th-century paper stock, with occasional light foxing and minor edge wear. Woodcut floral ornament to the title page remains sharp; woodcut initials and decorative headpieces throughout are crisp. An excellent, stable reading copy of a scarce 17th-century medical text. Catalogue Note: A fascinating and highly accessible fragment of 17th-century epidemiological history from the pen of Englandâs most rebellious and beloved herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper. Best known for his Complete Herbal, Culpeper famously defied the secretive, Latin-speaking College of Physicians by translating complex medical and pharmacological texts into vernacular English. His mission was to democratize medicine, allowing the common man to treat ailments using local herbs and astrological principles rather than paying exorbitant physician fees. This specific tract, Febrilia, was published one year after Culpeperâs death. It was issued by his widow and publisher as a dedicated section within the compilation Culpeperâs Last Legacy, a work designed to gather his remaining unpublished aphorisms, "Physical, Chyrurgicall Remains," and specific treatises. Febrilia offers a detailed window into early modern diagnostics and treatments for various feversâ"including the "Burning Feaver, called Kauosos" blending classical humoral theory with Culpeperâs trademark practical herbal remedies and astrological observations.
