Nicati, Constant. Specimen anatomico-pathologicum inaugurale, de labii leporini congeniti natura et origine. 8vo. [8, incl. initial blank leaf], 72pp. 1 plate. Utrecht & Amsterdam: Typographia Italica et Gallica, 1822. 209 x 130 mm. Original printed wrappers, a little soiled. Light browning and foxing, but very good. Author's presentation inscription to Gerard Sandifort (1779-1848) on front blank: "Viro clarissimo Sandifort / m. a." From the library of French surgeon Auguste Nelaton (1807-73), with the characteristic note "Melanges" in colored pencil (erased but still visible) on the title. First Edition of Nicati's thesis on harelip and cleft palate, written from the standpoint of pathological anatomy; Nicati lists Geoffroy St. Hilaire, Vrolik, Soemmerring and Meckel among his sources. Nicati was also indebted to the work of the Belgian pathological anatomists Eduard Sandifort, author of Observationes anatomicae-pathologicae (1777-81; G-M 2278), and his son Gerard, author of numerous works on anatomy and teratology (including the monumental Musaeum anatomicum Academiae Lugduno-Batavae [1793-1835], co-authored with Eduard), to whom Nicati presented this copy of his thesis. This copy later belonged to the eminent French surgeon Auguste Nelaton, whose classic Elemens de pathologie chirurgicale (1844-59; G-M 5597) contains chapters on plastic surgery; Zeis (no. 1862) also cites Nelaton's 1839 article on a new method of staphyloraphy published in the Bull. gen therap. Nicati's interest in the anatomy of harelip and cleft palate was no doubt at least partly due to the recent introduction, by von Graefe and Roux, of successful methods of surgically repairing clefts in the velum; see G-M 5739 and G-M 5741.2. Following the successes of both von Graefe and Roux, "surgical approximation was accepted by the medical profession as the treatment of choice for clefts of the velum" (Millard, Cleft Craft 3, p. 174), and increased knowledge of the anatomy of these deformities would have been essential. Scarce-when we checked OCLC cited only three copies in North American libraries (MiU, NLM, NNC). Zeis / Patterson 1868. Hirsch for G. Sandifort. .…
