Orig. cloth. iv, 82 pp. Woodcuts in the text. PRESENTATION COPY to Dr. John E. Losie wit…h holograph inscription dated May 1, 1879 (the preface is dated April, 1879). A very good copy. "Shaffer received his M.D. from New York University Medical College in 1867. He succeeded Charles Fayette Taylor (1827-99) as surgeon-in-chief at New York Orthopaedic Dispensary and Hospital in 1876. In 1900, he became the first professor of orthopedic surgery at Cornell University Medical College. This small monograph was Shaffer's initial contribution to American orthopedic surgery. In it, he criticized the conservative writings of James Knight (1810-87), which he felt amounted to practically surgical nihilism. Shaffer believed that more recoveries occur from a plan of non-interference with a tubercular abcess than from surgical opening of the absecess. He was an opponent of recumbency in the treatment of Pott's disease, and believed in protection of the diseased part, with the maintenance of functional activity of the other parts of the body. He opposed Lewis Sayre's (1820-1900) plaster-of-paris jacket and claimed in this monograph that it was not adapted to the treatment of Pott's disease. .Figures 6-11 are interesting line drawings of spinal deformaties."
