In den WarenkorbFirst Newell edition, scarce with both the dust jacket and publisher's box. This was the best-known of the many American illustrated editions published following Dodgson's death in 1898, and made Newell famous in his own right (Ovenden & Davis, p. 10). Newell, aware of the popularity of Tenniel's blonde Alice, wrote of his own dark-haired version that was an attempt to capture "a sweet, childish spirit at home in the midst of mystery". Williams-Madan-Green, pp. 221 & 233. Graham Ovenden & John Davis, The Illustrators of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, 1979; Peter Newell, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: from an Artist's Stand-point", Harper's Monthly Magazine, October 1901. Octavo. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Dodgson with tissue guard, 40 monochrome plates by Newell, text printed within pale green decorative borders designed by Robert Murray Wright. Original white boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front covers with gilt motif of Alice, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. With dust jacket and original box. Gilt bright, a few spots of foxing to endpapers and tissue guard; jacket a little toned, a few nicks: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.…
