Map very good, folder near fine. 1" edge tear near the center of the top edge, along one of the fold lines (neatly, archivally closed on verso); original, as-issued folds present but otherwise not weakened. T…his delightful, cartoonish map is printed in black on a thin, translucent onion-skin paper, and depicts a small area of Manhattan. Cartouche (in shape of a hip flask!) at lower right bears title cited above (along with "April 30th 7 P.M. / Make your reservations now / no tickets sold at the door"). Within this roughly-rectangular shaped decorative border runs the following (one line to each side): "FOR ITS ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER / WHEN GOOD FELLOWS GET TOGETHER / WITH A STEIN ON THE TABLE / AND A GOOD SONG RINGING CLEAR." Above this border, along the top edge, runs the caption in mock Colonial style: "Plates Respektfully & Mechanickally ENGRAV'D by Ye HAGOPIAN PHOTO ENGRAVING CO., Inc., Artisans of Greate SKILL, Expressly for Ye Occasion, and for ye PLEASURE of Master WHITEHEAD in Especiall." Below this border, along the bottom edge, runs another mock Colonial caption: "Printed & Bound with CARE by Ye Craftsmen yclept: Advertising Agencies' Service Co., And PRESENTED Gratis, albeit with GOOD GRACE, to Ye MOST WORSHIPPFULL Company of Ye ART Directors." The map itself shows the several block radius around the intersection of Broadway and 30th Street, with a number of buildings (Hofbrau, Lipsitz Bros. Cloaks & Suits, Daly's Theatre, John L's Place, etc.) depicted rather three-dimensionally. A Chinaman puffs a pipe atop a chop suey restaurant, a horse-drawn carriage rolls down a street, two cats face off atop a building and other bits of activity take place throughout. Commercial artist Walter Whitehead was born in 1874, and died in 1956, which helps date this undated piece -- presumably to later in his life, perhaps his retirement. The Art Directors Club was founded in 1920 "for the progress of art in advertising and industry" (according to their 1921 exhibition catalogue) and both Otto Rebele and Whitehead were among its founding members. About Rebele little is known. He was born around 1878 and was both commercial artist and book illustrator. This scarce and delicate map is a rare survivor, obviously printed in a small quantity for distribution to the membership of this specialized trade association.

This is a 1938 Fairmap Company pictorial map of New York City. The map depicts the city from the Hudson River to the Interborough Parkway between Brooklyn and Queens and from the Bronx to the Statue of L…iberty. Created as a promotional advertisement for The Roosevelt Hotel, located on Madison Avenue and 45th Street near Grand Central Station, numerous tourist attractions and New York City landmarks are illustrated in profile and identified. Some of these include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Radio City Music Hall, and Grand Central. Other New York City institutions, such as Barnard College, Columbia University, the Cooper Union, and the Fraunces Tavern are also noted. The Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, and Triborough Bridge are all illustrated. In anticipation of the 1939 World's Fair, the map shows the fairgrounds in Queens and marks the best automobile routes to them from Manhattan. Routes to the fair, and auto routes to the island of Manhattan from New Jersey and Upstate New York are shown with their ultimate terminus at The Roosevelt. Major streets throughout Manhattan are illustrated and labeled, including Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue, and 14th, 34th, and 42nd Streets. Express subway stops are also noted on the I.R.T., B.M.T., and Independent lines, although local stops are ignored. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the Fairmap Company as a promotional brochure for the Roosevelt Hotel.

This is a 1922 Regional Plan proof state infographic map of New York City, highlighting passenger rail traffic. The map is an early attempt to analyze the New York commute to better manage passenger rail networks. A Closer Look…The map covers the five boroughs of the city along with portions of Long Island, Westchester County, and Connecticut. The contours and features of the land are faint, overlaid with more prominent lines and shading indicating passenger rail routes. A wider area of shading denotes more passengers in a given 24-hour period, and narrower shading illustrates relatively fewer passengers. However, all the lines thus represented carried at least several dozen trains in each direction in a given day. This system explained in a legend at bottom-right, reveals that the Long Island Railroad and New York Central were the busiest lines, while New Jersey saw a great number of passengers reaching Manhattan via a larger number of lines, so numerous and dense that color shading is employed here to help distinguish them. Historically, passengers crossing either the Hudson River or East River would need to disembark and take ferries to Manhattan, but the completion of rail tunnels under both waterways between 1906 and 1910 revolutionized travel, allowing passengers from distant parts of New Jersey or Long Islands to take one continuous train journey (on an electrified rather than steam train) into the heart of the city, at Pennsylvania Station ('Old Penn Station') (passengers utilizing Grand Central Station for travel to/from the north would have used the older Park Avenue Tunnel, which was upgraded and renovated around this time to also run electrified trains). The First Regional Plan for New York The impetus for the creation of the Regional Plan of New York was driven primarily by three factors: first, the greater affordability and mass adoption of automobiles in the 1920s; second, the explosive growth of New York City's population at the turn of the 20th century; and, third, the contemporaneous Modernist affinity for ambitious urban planning. Inspired by similar plans for other cities, particularly the 1909 Burnham Plan for Chicago, a group of business and civic leaders led by banker Charles Dyer Norton and the Russell Sage Foundation formed an advisory committee in 1914 to propose an equivalent project for the New York City metropolitan region. Delayed by World War I (1914-1918) and other obstacles, the committee nevertheless made progress, adding prominent members (including future President Herbert Hoover) and forming a permanent body in 1922. After years of research and discussion, maps, publications, and other media were brought to the public starting in the 1920s, especially the late 1920s. Although the Regional Plan was not associated with the legendary urban planner Robert Moses (1888-1981), their ideas were largely congruent, and the Regional Plan provided added momentum to the push for building highways (including parkways) in the city in a more deliberate and comprehensive manner. While the emphasis here is on passenger rail, the number of automobiles on the road was skyrocketing when this map was being prepared. It is worth noting that although the 1930s saw a deep economic depression throughout the country, many infrastructure and urban planning projects were undertaken in New York City during these years, leaving the city with most of the bridges, tunnels, and highways that it maintains today. Publication History and Census This map was prepared in 1922 by the Physical Survey section of the Regional Plan of New York and Its Environs. It appeared in the 1923 book Maps and diagrams showing present conditions, New York and its environs, March, 1923 , published by the Physical Survey. However, unlike the published version of the map, which includes a page number (p. 23) and a title banner, this example lacks those feature.

This is a 1948 map of the 'Man and the Atom' exhibit, illustrating the America's brief Atomic Crase. The exhibit was assembled for the New York City Golden Anniversary Exposition at t…he Grand Central Palace. It was the most comprehensive atomic exhibition presented to the public up to that time. A Closer Look The map begins at the entrance to the exhibit and presents a confused attendee holding an 'Atomap'. Footprints illustrate the proposed path through the exhibition, and cartoons mark displays. Below and surrounding the map on three sides is a legend connecting cartoons with displays, noting each display's name and sponsor. The map ends with the same attendee exiting the exhibition with a huge smile, beaming at the 'Atomap.' 'Man and the Atom' 'Man and the Atom,' was the 'most comprehensive atomic energy exhibit ever presented to citizens' (at least up to that point). The atomic energy exhibition featured a Van de Graff generator. Another display included a demonstration in a lead cube where dimes were temporarily turned radioactive by turning the silver in the dimes into cadmium. Other exhibits included a Geiger counter and illustrations of the medical uses of radioactive isotopes. High school students volunteered as guides, giving short, prepared speeches about the exhibits. General Leslie Groves, the former head of the Manhattan Project, helped design the exhibit and visited it a week after it opened. The Atomic Craze The atomic craze in America during the 1940s was a cultural phenomenon that emerged in the wake of the development and use of atomic bombs during World War II (1939 - 1945). The public's fascination with nuclear energy and its potential was fueled by a mix of awe, fear, and curiosity. This craze was reflected in various aspects of American life, from science fiction movies and comic books featuring atomic-powered superheroes to the incorporation of 'atomic' themes in marketing, architecture, and consumer products. The atomic bomb's role in ending the war gave it an almost mythical status, leading to a widespread interest in all things nuclear, whether it was the promise of limitless energy or the looming threat of atomic annihilation. This period also saw the beginnings of the Cold War, which further intensified the public's fixation on atomic power as both a symbol of progress and a harbinger of potential doom. New York's Golden Jubilee Celebration In 1948, New York City celebrated its Golden Anniversary - 50 years since the 1898 consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York. Grover A. Whelan served as Chairman of the Mayor's Committee for the Commemoration of the Golden Anniversary, which organized the event. It was held at the Grand Central Palace, a 13-story building between 46th and 47th Streets that served as New York's main exhibition hall from 1911 until 1953. The exhibition was open from August 23, 1948, until September 19, 1948. The entry fee was 50 cents, and the exhibition filled the first 4 floors of the Grand Central Palace. The exhibition was meant to display the inner workings of their city government to New Yorkers. Displays highlighted the functions of 102 city departments, including the Police Department and the Department of Water Supply. WNYC broadcast from the first floor. A 'fashion pageant' took place daily, and 120 models presented fashion from 'every price point.' Publication History and Census This 'Atomap' was created for visitors to the atomic energy exhibition at New York's Golden Jubilee exhibition at the Grand Central Palace. This is the only known cataloged example.

It follows shortly after the development of New York's Elevated Train System - the city's first viable public transportation and the precursor of the modern system. Straphanger…s need a practical guide, and what could be better than the 'weatherproof,' 'tearproof,' and utilitarian handkerchief map - wipe the sweat from your brow and find your way! Published as 'McIntire's Pocket Handkerchief Guide of New York City,' the map depicts Manhattan from the Battery north to West 155th Street and the southern Bronx. Railroads in New York Elevated train lines along Second, Third, Sixth, Ninth, and Tenth Avenues are illustrated and generally labeled 'Manhattan Elevated Rail Road.' Railroads played an important role in New York City in the mid-19th century, but only the New York Central and Hudson Railroad and the New York and New Haven Railroad operated rail lines in Manhattan. All other rail lines ended on the banks of the Hudson River in New Jersey, and passengers were transported across the river by ferry. Even the Long Island Railroad did not operate in Manhattan at the time, with passengers directed to a ferry. Also, there were not yet bridges across the East River, thus necessitating ferry lines between Williamsburg and Manhattan. A Closer Look Streets and avenues throughout Manhattan are identified. New York served as a major commercial center, with most imports arriving by sea. Piers line the Hudson River and the East River in Lower Manhattan, many of which are identified by the operating shipping or railroad line. A handful of landmarks are identified, such as the American Museum of Natural History (which opened in 1869), Grand Central Station, and an insane asylum in the Upper West Side. Central Park appears in some detail, with Croton Reservoir, two receiving reservoirs, and The Ramble noted. Indexes of points of interest and ferries across the East and North rivers occupy the upper left, while indexes of railroads, hotels, and amusements appear in the lower right. Dating This Piece Although undated, we used the American Museum of Natural History (which opened in 1869) and the absence of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (which opened in 1870) to arrive at the c. 1869 date. Publication History and Census This map was created and printed by Bridgman Maps and published by McIntire c. 1869. This is the only known cataloged example.

A remarkable 1758/1781 idiosyncratically engraved map offering a uniquely French perspective on the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). It is based on the first-hand experiences of French engineer Pierre Pouchot de Maupas. A Closer Look The map… covers the primary American theater of the war, extending from just west of Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in western Pennsylvania to New York City and New Jersey, and from the Delaware Bay to Montreal, illustrating the full course of the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers. In a letter to the Marshal de Belle-Isle, dated Montreal, April 14, 1758, Pouchot describes this very map, I have handed to the Marquis de Vaudreuil, a map and memoir, on the subject of the French and English frontiers which I have drawn up on the best informations I have been able to procure, during my sojourn at Niagara. I have laid down in my voyages, the course of the river from Montreal, Lake Ontario as far as Lake Eire; therefore it has an appearance of truth which correctly represents the country and is not contained in any other maps. As I have not been on the English frontier, I laid that down according to their best maps, which I again corrected on such reliable information as I have obtained. It is in sufficient detail however, to show the interest we ought to take to prevent the English interposing obstacles in the way of the Iroquois and Loups, who form a barrier. That country, my Lord, would be well worth being seen by experienced eyes, which has not yet been the case; the well known carrying place of Niagara is an evident proof. The most recent accounts thereof, describe it as the most rugged of Alps, whilst 'tis only a rise of ground, a little more elevated that that of Bellvue. Below and above are very fine plains, as can be seen on my map. Pouchot's letter defines the map as having been drawn in America prior to 1758, during the French and Indian War. It is unclear if it was engraved or printed in America, but the style overall is idiosyncratic, suggesting an informal hand, as will be discussed later. The Theater of War through French Eyes Pouchot was a military engineer whose specialization in fortifications was critical to the French war effort. During the course of the war, he was dispatched throughout the region to shore up defenses and manage siege works. Not only was he present during many of the most significant battles, but he was also captured twice and sent to New York as a prisoner of war - where he earned the respect of his British captors and was treated as a gentleman. As such, this map offers a remarkable contemporaneous (1755 - 1759) overview of the theater of war as the well-educated and well-traveled French engineer understood it. Emphasis is given to inland transportation networks, including roads and navigable riverways, as well as to fortifications, all of which would have been essential to the French war effort. Among the forts noted are Duquesne (Pittsburgh), with the location where the French clashed with George Washington in 1754 marked nearby by crossed swords. Other forts identified include Fort Chougen (Oswego), Fort Niagara, Fort Presque Isle, Fort Cumberland, Ft. La Presentation, Ft. Levis, Fort Chambly, Ft. St. Jean, Fort Carillon, Fort St. Frederic, Ft. William Henry, Fort George, Ft. Hunter, and others. Curious Manuscript Annotations Several finely executed red-inked manuscript annotations are evident on all surviving examples of this map. These refer to Pouchot's travels along the Saint Lawrence. Starting near Montreal, numbered indicators illustrate Pouchot's journey. En route, he visits the Mississauga Indian island village of Toniata (Grenadier Island), as well as the small river islands identified here as I. au Citron and I. au Cochis. The voyage is recorded in Pouchot's narrative, where he writes of Toniata, At five leagues from Point au Baril is the Island of Toniata. The main channel of the riv.

The map reflects significant German interest in the war related to widespread participation by Germans on both sides of the conflict. A Closer…Look This is Lotter's German edition of Sauthier's map of 1776, with coverage embracing from Quebec and Lake Champlain along the Hudson Valley Corridor south as far as Delaware Bay, inclusive of all of New York (as it then appeared) and New Jersey, as well as significant portions of adjacent Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Delaware. Vermont is here attached to New York, as it was at this time legally part of New York (as shown), although practically under the control of the New Hampshire land grantee Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys. The present example offers impressive detail in both New York and New Jersey with color coding identifying county lines. Topography, though minimal, is rendered in profile. The boundary line between East and West Jersey is noted as are various conflicting boundaries associated with the New York-New Jersey border dispute. The Tienaderha River (Unadilla River) marks the western frontier of colonial power in the region and recognizes the territory of the Six Nations Tribes - with various geographical features and American Indian villages noted. In Pennsylvania, just east of the Susquehanna, Sauthier identifies the 'Great Swamp'. Though modern residents of this region may have hard time recognizing it, there was once a vast wetland in modern day Bucks County. Today the much reduced 'Great Swamp' is called the Quakertown Swamp and is a protected wetland popular with birders. Historical Context This map is essentially a summary of mapping in New York completed by the British Corps of Engineers in the years just prior to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). Sauthier was the official surveyor of the province of New York from 1773 to 1776, a period that witnessed numerous boundary disputes both within the colony and with neighboring Quebec, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. These disputes fostered a wealth of new survey information and encouraged a careful re-examination of older survey work - most of which was accomplished by Sauthier and those under him. When Sauthier briefly returned to London in 1774, he met with William Faden to publish a new, definitive map of the region - the 1776 first edition. German Interest in the American Revolution In the early years of the Revolutionary War, the ethnically German King of England, George III, called on his resources as Prince-elector of Hanover, a title which he held concurrently with his British titles, to field numerous German soldiers in defense of his claims in America. On the Continental side, pre-war German immigration led to the formation of the Provost Corps in Pennsylvania and the German Regiment. Other Germans fought for American independence under the French Flag. The significant presence of German forces on both sides of the conflict fostered a wide interest throughout German lands in the unfolding war in the Americas. Lotter was quick to capitalize on this interest with the 1777 republication of Sauthier's important map, essentially the most up to date map of the region available at the time. Publication History and Census This map was engraved and published by Matthäus Albrecht Lotter in Augsburg. It was sold individually, as well as included in some editions of Seutter's Grosser Atlas , published by Lotter in 1778, as well as in some examples of Seutter's Atlas Novus , and in various composite atlases of the period. A Closer Look Coverage embraces all of New York and New England, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, as well as much of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and Ontario. Inset maps detail New York City, Boston, and the railroad corridor between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Surrounded by a spectacularly decorative border featuring attractive engraved vignette views of New York Harbor, Boston Harbor, Toronto, and Montreal. The booklet also features a smaller map covering Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware. Bound in gilt-stamped green linen. Publication History and Census This map was compiled by J. H. Colton and engraved by J. M. Atwood. This is the first edition, 1850. Updated editions followed near-annually through 1856. All editions of this map are extremely rare, but the 1850 first edition is especially so. In OCLC, we note just two other first-edition examples: Huntington Library and Yale. A rare separate issue 1869 John Bute Holmes map of the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The map captures the break-up of these lands to accommodate the Manhattan grid system. A Closer Look The map cov…ers from the Hudson River to 7th Avenue and from 19th to 29th street. Like all of Holmes' important neighborhood maps, the present map focuses on the mid-19th century breakup of the great Manhattan estates into property lots. The present example the focuses on the estates of Franklin, Robinson, heiress Janet de Kay (1802 - 1854), shipbuilder Henry Eckford (1775 - 1832), heiress Mary Clarke, and the academic and heir Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863). The Chelsea Farm Retired British Army Captain Thomas Clarke acquired a large 94 acre country estate in Manhattan (as odd as that sounds) in 1750. The deed, which was quoted in the New York Times, describes it as all that farm or plantation in the Bassau Bowery on the West side of Manhattan Island, bounded on the west by the Hudson River, on the east by land of John Horn, on the north by the land of Widow Cowenhoven and Brandt Schuyer, on the south by land of Sir Peter Warren and Yellis Mandeville. In modern terms, the approximate extant of the estate was from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River from 21st to 24th streets. Here, Clarke built a grand mansion which he named Chelsea, referencing London's Chelsea Hospital, a home for aged veterans, which he in fact was. The lands were eventually broken up among his heirs until the mid-19th century, when the estates were fully broken up into smaller lots to accommodate the Manhattan grid system and rapid urbanization. A 19th Century Description of the Map We cannot resist quoting this overwrought 1878 description of Holmes' map issued in Historical Magazine (Page 268), The estates described in this map, extend along the exterior line, on the North-river, from Nineteenth to Twenty-eighth Streets; thence along the latter Street to the Tenth Avenue; thence to Ninth Avenue seventy-five feet North of Twenty-eighth Street; thence southerly about two hundred feet; thence to the old Fitzroy Road - Twenty-seventh Street near Eighth Avenue; thence, along that old road, nearly to Twenty-ninth Street; thence, easterly, to Twenty-ninth Street, about two hundred feet easterly from the Seventh Avenue; thence nearly parallel with the Seventh Avenue, to Twenty-first Street; thence along the latter Street to the Fitzroy Road near the Eighth Avenue; thence along the Fitzroy Road to Nineteenth Street; and thence, along the latter Street. to the place beginning. Quite the long winded description! Holmes' 'Farm Maps' In the early 19th century most of Manhattan was undeveloped farmlands, the property of wealthy landowners with claims dating to the Dutch period of New York's history. The northern 2/3rd Manhattan was dotted with farmlands and sprawling gentlemanly estates, many with great manor houses overlooking the Hudson River. The Commissioner's Plan of 1811 and the 1807 Commission Law, laid the street grid through many of these properties and gave the city the right to claim these lands under eminent domain, providing due compensation to the landowners. While this work occurred early in lower Manhattan, central and upper Manhattan were not formally acquired by the city until the mid-19th century. Holmes became fascinated by the early history of Manhattan real estate ownership, recognizing the wealth to be accrued by accurately understanding the history of city land ownership, division, and inheritance. Moreover, Holmes allied himself with the corrupt Tweed administration, assuring himself and his allies even greater wealth and political power from the eminent domain seizure of old Manhattan estates. Holmes created a series of maps, reminiscent of John Randall's 'Farm Maps', overlaid with property data, showing the borders of old estates, and notatin.

This is a fine 1913 U.S. Geological Survey map depicting the areal geology of the Niagara County (including the Niagara River and the Niagara Falls), New York. The map shows the distribution of the different types of rocks or geological formations of the region, covering from Lake…Ontario to Tonawanda and from Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada and the Niagara River east as far as Newstead. The map notes several towns, rivers, railroads, roads, buildings, bridges, and a host of additional features. A legend is included in the top left quadrant of the map. This map is based on geology survey conducted by E.M. Kindle and G. K. Gilbert in 1897, 98 and 1909. Topography is by U.S. Lake Survey, Frank Sutton, E. B. Clark and J. H. Wheat surveyed in 1893 and 1896 in cooperation with the state of New York, with triangulation by U.S. Land Survey under the supervision of H.M. Wilson, Geographer in charge. Issued in 1913 by the U.S. Geological Survey with George Otis Smith, Director, as part of Geological Atlas of the United States, Niagara Folio, New York, by E.M. Kindle and Frank. B. Taylor .
