(The first two volumes were "Results of the Meteorological Observations 1859-1862" and "Nautical Observations 1858-1862".) Spine lacking, tape ghosts on covers, corners bumped, plates 5,6,7,8 are present twice, plates 1,2,3,4 not present. Very rare publication by this German scientist after who the German "Georg von Neumayer Station" in Antarctica is named. Flagstaff Observatory, established at Flagstaff Hill in central Melbourne in 1858, was the creation of German scientist Georg Balthasar von Neumayer. He had trained as a physicist, and absorbed the current interest in terrestrial magnetism and its practical importance for navigation and exploration. Neumayer visited Victoria in 1852, and spent time as a miner at Bendigo and ship's mate on coastal vessels. While in Victoria he developed the idea of establishing a magnetic and meteorological observatory in Melbourne, applying the new sciences to virtually unexplored terrain. Flagstaff Observatory ceased its observations in November 1863, as responsibility for the magnetic and meteorological observations passed to Melbourne Observatory.…

Neumayer, director of Melbourne's Flagstaff Observatory, established in 1858, here brings together four years of systematic meteorological observations from across the colony, with detailed records of temperature, atmospheric pressure, rainfall, winds and other phenomena. Particularly notable are the observations of the Aurora Australis, magnetic storms and zodiacal light, illustrated by the striking coloured frontispiece; the volume also includes charts and plates. The substantial nautical section draws on ships' logs and Neumayer's analysis of weather and oceanic conditions between Europe and Australia, including an important study of gales and cyclones in the southern hemisphere. The volume represents a significant stage in the institutionalisation of scientific observation in Australia and in Neumayer's wider programme of southern-hemisphere meteorological and magnetic research. Born in Bavaria in 1849, Neumayer became an important figure in colonial science, convinced that Australia provided important opportunities for scientific research, and distinguished himself by his survey of Victoria and his work of many years at the Flagstaff Observatory.
